Days after celebrating the premiere of her latest Hallmark movie, “Wedding Season,” and her own wedding to fellow Hallmark actor Sebastian Gacki, actress Stephanie Bennett posted details of a “really creepy” incident in which she was followed by a man in his car on the morning of June 22, 2023.

Though the actress is okay, she was clearly shaken up by the encounter. Sitting in her own vehicle, Bennett posted a video in her Instagram Stories in which she described the encounter and then pleaded with men to consider how “terrifying” such behavior is for women.

Stephanie Bennett Pleads With Men to Think About Impact of Their Actions

Bennett, who’s appeared in many Hallmark projects including 2022’s “Christmas Class Reunion” and episodes of “The Aurora Teagarden Mysteries” and “Signed, Sealed and Delivered,” posted an impromptu video midday on June 22 as she sat in the driver’s seat of her vehicle.

“Okay, I’m in my car and I just had this really creepy thing happen,” she said, looking straight at the camera. “You know, it’s the middle of the day — it’s like 11:30 on a Thursday — and I’m going and I’m getting my coffee and I’m about to go to an appointment and, like, I noticed there’s this car just at pace with me.”

“And the guy’s looking,” she continued. “He’s just looking, just straight up following me for blocks in his car. Like, then I look at him and I kind of give this look like ‘Can I help you?’ And he sort of speeds off and then he goes two blocks ahead and he just stops there with his hazards on like, as if he’s waiting for me to catch up.”

Bennett didn’t say whether she took another route or passed the man’s car; instead, she began talking about how hard it is for women to have to deal with feeling unsafe so often.

“Man, I really wish men were more, just, cognizant of how terrifying it is to be a woman on a daily basis,” she said. “Like, it’s the middle of the day. And genuinely, my heart started racing and my palms started sweating because he was, like, following me!”

Bennett then said she’d much prefer that a guy who’s interested in her maturely and cautiously approach her.

“Like, if you’re gonna shoot your shot or you’re going to try to talk to me or something and you’re polite enough, I’ll politely say, ‘Thank you so much, I’m married. You know, have a good day.’ But if you’re going to literally follow me in your car…”

Bennett, who lives in Vancouver, then suddenly remembered a similar incident two weeks prior.

She recalled, “A guy rolled his window down and he’s like, ‘Hey do you know how to use Uber?’ And I said, ‘Yeah, you just go on the app and you just use it’ and I kept my distance. And he said, ‘Come here, can you do it on my phone for me?’ Like, he had his car door open! Do you know how terrifying that is? Like, what if he grabbed me — again, in the middle of the day, but like, I just don’t think men really understand.”

“And I’m so frustrated right now,” Bennett added, “because they don’t understand how friggin’ scary that is. Don’t do that. Okay, guys? Don’t do that. That’s not how you do it. Anyway, that’s my rant. Thanks for listening.”

Police Offer Tips for Drivers Who Think They’re Being Followed

San Francisco police

In recent months, police in many cities have issued warnings to drivers — especially women — about staying alert and notifying authorities when they think they’re being followed in their cars.

In early June, three women were attacked while sitting at a stoplight in Toledo, Ohio, according to WTVG, just after they realized they were being followed.

“They were like kicking the car and punching mirrors and punching windows,” one of the victims told the station. “They were pulling on the door handles trying to pull us out. Literally, one of them climbed on the roof of the car and started jumping on it like it was a trampoline.”

Luckily, people at an apartment complex nearby saw the crime in progress and yelled at the attackers to leave, which they did. Police still haven’t found the suspects, the station said.

In San Antonio, Texas, Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar told NBC affiliate News4 in February that women there were being targeted by carjackers in the early morning hours. Each victim was driving alone and noticed that she was being followed before suspects got out of their cars and approached the women’s vehicles, tapping their windows with handguns and demanding they get out of their cars.

“We still know that this is a common occurrence,” Sheriff Salazar said, adding that women should never drive home and lead their potential attackers to where they live. “Be aware of your surroundings, check your rearview mirrors frequently, and again if you think you’re being followed don’t go wherever it is you were going, continue to drive and call it in.”

The Houston Police Department offers similar guidance in its “Keep Houston Safe” guide for residents. Among its tips for drivers are to immediately lock their doors upon entering the car, avoid eye contact with aggressive drivers and, in cases where they think they’re being followed, drive to the nearest police station, fire station, open gas station or a well-lighted area where there are people who can help.

Major Jon Kaylor: Kellogg, Idaho, Father Is In Custody https://heavy.com/news/major-jon-kaylor/ https://heavy.com/news/major-jon-kaylor/#respond Mon, 19 Jun 2023 17:52:22 +0000 https://heavy.com/?p=4474205

Major Jon Kaylor is in custody in the City of Kellogg, Idaho, after the June 18, 2023, shooting deaths of his neighbors, including two teenagers and their mother.

Kaylor is accused of killing Kenneth Guardipee, 65; his daughter, Kenna Guardipee, 41; and her sons, Devin R. Smith, 18, and Aiken Smith, 16, according to The Spokesman-Review.

The shooting deaths occurred just days after Kaylor’s wife, in a now-deleted Facebook post, accused Devin Smith of exposing himself to the couple’s minor children. Kenna Guardipee was the mother of Devin Smith. Aiken was his brother.

The Shoshone County Sheriff’s Department wrote in a Facebook post, “On June 18th at approximately 7:30 p.m., the Kellogg Police Department and the SCSO responded to the City of Kellogg reference four people deceased from gunshot wounds.”

An official at the Shoshone County jail confirmed to Heavy on June 19, 2023, that Kaylor is in custody. Some sites have given Kaylor’s name as Majorjon Kaylor, the name he goes by on Facebook.

Here’s what you need to know:

1. Major Jon Kaylor’s Wife Wrote a Lengthy Post Accusing Devin Smith of Exposing Himself to Their Kids & Shared a Graphic Showing a Man Shooting Another Person

The suspect’s wife, Kaylie Kaylor, posted a photo of her family on Facebook.

Many of her photos show the suspect with his kids. Five days before the homicides, she wrote a lengthy post sharing Devin Smith’s photo and accusing him of exposing himself to their juvenile girls.

“So we got new downstairs neighbors 2 weeks ago. They have two teenage boys, one just graduated and the other one does next year. We share a backyard, my kids stay on their side but they are out there a lot. They jump on the trampoline with the sprinkler. Almost every single time the older boy goes outside on his porch and seems to be watching them. I tried to brush it off since it’s their yard too but my momma gut couldn’t shake it,” she wrote.

The post says that the two girls were coloring with chalk in the in the backyard when one told her “the boy is in the window” exposing himself and masturbating.

“I make an effort to not look in their windows so the fact that he was standing right in front of it and my daughters saw everything is absolutely disgusting,” she wrote.

She said she ran to get the suspect. “I immediately ran to get Major who went down to go bang on the window, he was gone so Major went to the front door and had to knock several times before he got an answer,” she wrote. “I am freaking distraught. I’m already so uncomfortable living here and now this.”

The mother wrote that she “called the landlord to let him know in case they start trying to complain about us or if they want to try and start drama and get us kicked out so he knows why. I am livid. The police have been called! I don’t take stuff like this lightly, I just want to protect my children but people always act like you are being dramatic. This is the last thing I want to be dealing with in this market. Now my kids can’t play outside like they’ve been able to for years when there was just a sweet old lady living below us.”

On June 13, the suspect’s wife shared a graphic on Facebook of a man shooting another person in the head with the phrase, “How to catch a predator.”

2. Major Jon Kaylor Is Accused of Telling Authorities He ‘Snapped’

According to the Spokesman-Review, Kaylor is accused of telling police he “snapped.” His wife’s claims have not yet been confirmed by police, the newspaper reported.

Katy James told Spokesman-Review that Devin Smith had a “learning disability and struggled socially,” but a classmate, Daisy Sawyer, told the newspaper Smith “harassed her at school and was known to be inappropriate.”

The Sheriff’s Department wrote that the suspect is in custody.

“The suspect has been detained and there is no threat to the community. This investigation is ongoing with KPD and ISP as the primary investigators. They will release more details as the investigation continues,” the release says.

On Father’s Day, Kaylor’s wife wrote on Facebook, “Happy Father’s Day to the best dad ever. I see you and all that you do for your kids and I. You work hard, stand your ground and don’t give up. You’re the exact person I want our kids looking up to. Our life together is the greatest and I’m so amazingly lucky to have someone like you as the father to my children. The kids and I love you! Can’t wait for you to get home from work♡”

3. Major Jon Kaylor Works as an Underground Miner

According to his Facebook page, Major Jon Kaylor works as an underground miner at Idaho Strategic Resources.

His page says he is a “former choker setter/riggin man at Parkin Forestry” and that he lives in Kellogg, Idaho, and is married to Kaylie Kaylor.

4. Devin Smith’s Mother Recently Posted a Graduation Photo on Facebook

On Facebook, Devin Smith shared a few graphics and wrote that he started attending Kellogg High School in 2019 and finished in 2023. “Ready for school to see everyone,” he wrote.

He only had three friends on the Facebook page.

His brother, Aiken Smith, only had pictures of the outdoors visible on his Facebook page. He only listed five Facebook friends. On a second Facebook page, Aiken Smith posted photos of young men in military uniforms.

On June 3, their mother, Kenna Guardipee posted a graduation photo with her sons on her Facebook page.

5. The Community Was Divided Over the Homicides

Some people defended the suspect on Facebook. “So sad he had no other choice to protect his family. Nothing was done when reported,” a woman wrote on the Sheriff’s Department’s comment thread.

However, another woman responded, “um he absolutely had other choices and one of those choices was to not k*ll innocent people, including a 16 year old. You can’t take out an entire family. Bro. Wtf is wrong with some of y’all?”

A woman wrote, “This is such a horrific event. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families and the entire community of Kellogg.”

Chad Doerman: Ohio Father Accused of Murdering 3 Sons https://heavy.com/news/chad-doerman/ https://heavy.com/news/chad-doerman/#respond Fri, 16 Jun 2023 03:22:41 +0000 https://heavy.com/?p=4472021

Chad Doerman is a 32-year-old Ohio man who is accused of shooting his three small sons to death on June 15, 2023, according to a press release from the Clermont County Sheriff’s Department.

The three deceased victims were ages 7, 4 and 3, a sheriff’s release says.

The triple shooting occurred in Monroe Township in Ohio, about 30 minutes southeast of Cincinnati. The sheriff’s news release also said that the boys’ mother was shot in the hand but is expected to survive. The father is under arrest, the sheriff’s release said.

The release did not specify a motive.

Here’s what you need to know:

A Female Juvenile Ran Down the Road Stating That Her ‘Father Was Killing Everyone,’ Sheriff’s Officials Say

At 4:15 p.m. on June 15, 2023, the Clermont County Communication Center received a 911 call from an unknown female who was screaming that “her babies had been shot,” the sheriff’s release said.

At 4:18 p.m., a second 911 call was made to the Communication Center from a passerby (driving on the road) who reported that a female juvenile was seen running down the road stating that “her father was killing everyone,” the release said.

Clermont County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a residence in the 1900 block of Laurel Lindale Road and made contact with Doerman, 32, who was sitting on a step outside the residence, the release said. Doerman was detained “without incident,” it said.

“It’s just a bad situation. Nothing like that ever happens in this area — just a quiet, country, really nice area. So, to hear this, it’s terrible,” neighbor Dan Thomas told WLWT-TV. “I’m shocked, to be honest with you. We moved here six years ago and the place is great, and New Richmond’s coming up. You just hate to see anything like this, anywhere.”

Thomas told the television station: “I was sitting in the garage and all of a sudden, I hear ‘boom, boom’ and like five more, and I was like, ‘That’s seven shots.'”

Deputies Discovered 3 ‘Unresponsive Gunshot Victims in the Yard,’ Sheriff’s Officials Say

Deputies discovered “three unresponsive gunshot victims in the yard of the residence and attempted lifesaving measures until Monroe Fire/EMS arrived,” the release said.

The three gunshot victims died at the scene, the release says.

A fourth gunshot victim, an adult female who was the boys’ mother, 34, was “also located outside of the residence,” it said. She had a single gunshot wound to her hand that was not life-threatening and was taken to a hospital in Cincinnati, the release said.

Authorities wrote that they were interviewing witnesses and processing the scene. There were no signs of forced entry and the sheriff’s office was not seeking other suspects, the release said.

Chad Doerman Is the Father of the ‘3 Deceased Juveniles,’ Sheriff’s Officials Say

According to the Clermont County Sheriff’s Office in a news release, Doerman, 32, is the father of the “three deceased juveniles.”

He has been charged with three counts of aggravated murder, “all unclassified felonies,” the release said.

Doerman was transported to the Clermont County Jail “after being interviewed by detectives and is currently being held without bond,” according to the release. He was scheduled to appear for arraignment on Friday, June 16, 2023, at 10 a.m. in Clermont County Municipal Court, the release said.

The Clermont County Prosecutor’s Office was reviewing the case for presentation to the grand jury “for consideration of additional charges,” the news release said.

The New Richmond School District posted a statement on its Facebook page, writing, “Our hearts are once again broken tonight as we yet again ask the community to lift up those affected by this horrific incident.”

Unabomber Dead: Cause of Death for Ted Kaczynski https://heavy.com/news/unabomber-dead-cause-of-death/ https://heavy.com/news/unabomber-dead-cause-of-death/#respond Sat, 10 Jun 2023 17:22:13 +0000 https://heavy.com/?p=4465742

Ted Kaczynski, the man known as the “Unabomber,” has died in prison, the Associated Press reported, citing the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

ABC News, The New York Times, CNN, and other major news outlets reported that Kaczynski died of a possible suicide. ABC News reported that Kaczynski’s death was being investigated as a possible suicide, but there is no formal cause of death determination yet. The news sites cited unnamed sources.

According to ABC News, Kaczynski was found dead in his prison cell on the morning of June 10, 2023. He had been moved to a “medical facility in North Carolina in December 2021 due to poor health,” ABC reported.

According to the AP, the Bureau of Prisons declined to elaborate on Kaczynski’s medical condition when he was moved. He was 81-years-old when he died, AP reported. Heavy has reached out to the Bureau of Prisons for additional details.

Here’s what you need to know:

According to the FBI, the ‘Unabomber’ Ted Kaczynski Built Homemade Bombs That Killed 3 People & Injured ‘Nearly 2 Dozen More’

Unabomber

fbi.govTed Kaczynski, a/k/a the Unabomber.

According to the FBI, Theodore Kaczynski “came to our attention in 1978 with the explosion of his first, primitive homemade bomb at a Chicago university. Over the next 17 years, he mailed or hand delivered a series of increasingly sophisticated bombs that killed three Americans and injured nearly two dozen more. Along the way, he sowed fear and panic, even threatening to blow up airliners in flight.”

The FBI’s page on the Unabomber says the “big break in the case came in 1995.”

“The Unabomber sent us a 35,000 word essay claiming to explain his motives and views of the ills of modern society. After much debate about the wisdom of ‘giving in to terrorists,’ FBI Director Louis Freeh and Attorney General Janet Reno approved the task force’s recommendation to publish the essay in hopes that a reader could identify the author,” the FBI reported. “After the manifesto appeared in The Washington Post, thousands of people suggested possible suspects.”

The Unabomber’s Brother Identified Him to Authorities, the FBI Says

GettyScreen shot, from WBBM-TV Chicago, shows a high school yearbook photo (from Evergreen, Illinois in 1958) of Theodore Kaczynski, April 3, 1996.

According to the FBI, after the publication of the manifesto, Kaczynski’s brother David Kaczynski came forward to authorities and “described his troubled brother Ted, who had grown up in Chicago, taught at the University of California at Berkeley (where two of the bombs had been placed), then lived for a time in Salt Lake City before settling permanently into the primitive 10’ x 14’ cabin that the brothers had constructed near Lincoln, Montana.”

The brother “provided letters and documents written by his brother. Our linguistic analysis determined that the author of those papers and the manifesto were almost certainly the same. When combined with facts gleaned from the bombings and Kaczynski’s life, that analysis provided the basis for a search warrant,” the FBI wrote.

“On April 3, 1996, investigators arrested Kaczynski and combed his cabin. There, they found a wealth of bomb components; 40,000 handwritten journal pages that included bomb-making experiments and descriptions of Unabomber crimes; and one live bomb, ready for mailing,” the FBI continued.

According to the FBI, the deceased victims included the president of the California Forestry Association, an advertising executive, and the owner of a Sacramento computer store. The United Airlines president, a geneticist, and an engineering student were among the victims who survived attacks by the Unabomber, according to the FBI.

Norah Horwitz: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know https://heavy.com/news/norah-horwitz/ https://heavy.com/news/norah-horwitz/#respond Thu, 08 Jun 2023 14:14:49 +0000 https://heavy.com/?p=4463716

Norah Horwitz is the suspect accused of stabbing her prominent dentist father Abbey Horwitz to death in Virginia Beach, Virginia, according to Virginia Beach Police.

According to a press release from the Virginia Beach Police Department, “On June 3, 2023, at 8:54 A.M., officers from the Virginia Beach Police Department responded to a call for service in the 1300 block of Wren Place.”

“Officers located Dr. Abbey Horwitz (M/68) suffering from multiple stab wounds. Dr. Horwitz was pronounced deceased by EMS at 9:13 A.M. Michael (Norah) Horwitz (F/34) of Virginia Beach was arrested and charged with 2nd Degree Murder and Stabbing in the Commission of a Felony. She is currently being held at the Virginia Beach Jail,” the release said.

The New York Post reported that, according to police, Horwitz is transgender and in the process of transitioning.

Here’s what you need to know:

1. Norah Horwitz Is Accused of Stabbing Abbey Horwitz to Death During a ‘Family Fight’

Norah Horwitz was supposed to appear in court for a bond hearing but it was withdrawn so Horwitz could “figure out legal counsel” after being assigned a public defender, according to WTKR.

The motive for the stabbing is not clear. The New York Post reported that the stabbing occurred during a “family fight.”

According to 13NewsNow, Horwitz is under suicide watch in the jail.

A neighbor told The Virginian-Pilot that the doctor’s death was like a “Greek tragedy.”

“What I will always remember is he was always having his whole family together, kind of like ‘The Waltons,’” the neighbor said of Abbey Horwitz to The Virginian-Pilot. “… He seemed like the consummate family guy.”

2. Norah Horwitz Is 1 of 3 Children Born to Dr. Abbey Horwitz & His Wife Brenda

According to The Art of Dentristry, Horwitz’s dentistry, Abbey Horwitz was “married to his wife Brenda for over 25 years and is the proud parent of their three children, Michael, Shayna and Jonathan.”

“They are collectively the local educational product of the Hebrew Academy of Tidewater, Cape Henry Collegiate, the Governor’s School of the Arts, First Colonial and Cox High School,” the website says. “Being an active part of the community, serving as President of the Hebrew Academy of Tidewater and as President of the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater, doing community care dentistry for our neighbors who are in need as an ongoing project are just some of the ways he tries to give back.”

The website adds: “Dr. Horwitz has also been involved in volunteer dental services and projects in Israel, Romania and the former Soviet Union. Recently, Dr. Horwitz traveled to Nicaragua through Physicians for Peace to train dental professionals on good oral hygiene.”

It continues,

Growing up in the Bronx, Abbey graduated Fordham University before attending the Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry in Richmond. Upon graduation he moved to Virginia Beach to open his own practice. Along the way he has attended numerous continuing education programs in all facets of dentistry with strong concentrations on comprehensive care for difficult cases, all phases of cosmetic dentistry as well as attending the year and a half long Maxi course on dental implants at New York University’s School of Dentistry. Dentistry is an ever changing and growing art and learning is such an important part of offering the very best care.

3. Norah Horwitz Is a Portland-Based Artist Who Uses the ‘Drag Alter Ego’ Menorah Horwitz

According to Floating World Comics, Menorah Horwitz “is the drag alter ego of Portland based artist Michael Horwitz. He received his BFA in Film and Television studies from New York University and his MFA in Visual Studies from Pacific Northwest College of Art.”

The site continues: “Previous printed projects include the self-published ‘My Boyfriend Walt Whitman’ and ‘The Wookie Woof Book.’ His work has been featured in PDX Contemporary Art, PICA’s Time Based Arts Festival, Disjecta, and Linework NW. In 2015 he was named ‘A Queer to Watch’ by Advocate.com.”

Paste Magazine wrote of the artist: “Perhaps the only person to ever graduate from an editorial position at Marvel Comics (it didn’t work out) to performing in drag shows and drawing Wookie porn, Menorah Horwitz has crafted a one-of-a-kind path for herself through, around, away from and back into the comic world.”

The Advocate wrote that “Skanky Lisa Frank” is “how a friend of Michael’s described him, and that sounds about right. A Seattle-area illustrator, Michael can be caught drawing portraits at bars, creating fliers and zines, and making up soap operas on Facebook.”

“I love making things that are rooted visually in stuff that I loved as a kid, be that ballet, classic portraits, superhero comics, cartoons, fashion magazines, and Lifetime TV,” Horwitz told The Advocate. “I also try to emphasize and announce my own sexual and romantic desperation, like in the My Boyfriend Walt Whitman Facebook soap opera. In that project I dated someone named Walt Whitman for eight months; he liked to write poetry and I liked to remind people that I have a boyfriend who wrote poetry. We were a very creative couple.”

The Advocate continued: “Last year Horowitz illustrated a Star Wars sex zine with collaborator Kevin Kauer, titled The Wookie Woof Book. Since then, he’s exhibited queer paper dolls at the Linework NW fest and done a residency at the Portland Art Museum, and he’s working on a new porn zine.”

Horwitz is referred to as Michael Horwitz in some of these articles but used Norah Horwitz on Facebook. Horwitz’s Tumblr and Instagram pages are deleted.

4. Norah Horwitz Posted Artwork & a Black Lives Matter Graphic on Facebook

On Facebook, Norah Horwitz posted selfies, artwork, and a Black Lives Matter graphic.

In 2017, Horwitz wrote on Facebook, “Thanks to everyone who posted their personal stories for International Mental Health Day yesterday. Sharing your words and experiences did more than you know. Please be kind to yourselves today and everyday. Lots of love.”

Susan Lorincz, Ajike Owens Suspect: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know https://heavy.com/news/susan-lorincz-ajike-owens/ https://heavy.com/news/susan-lorincz-ajike-owens/#respond Wed, 07 Jun 2023 23:11:54 +0000 https://heavy.com/?p=4461043

Susan Lorincz is the 58-year-old woman who is accused of shooting her neighbor, Ajike Owens, to death on June 2, 2023, after police say Owens knocked on her door near Ocala, Florida, according to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.

“On Tuesday, June 6, 2023, Marion County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) Major Crimes Detective Ryan Stith arrested Susan Louise Lorincz (W/F, DOB: 7/23/1964) for the killing of 35-year-old Ajike Owens,” the sheriff’s office wrote in a statement posted to its Facebook page.

Lorincz is white, and Owens was Black, and the shooting sparked protests, according to CBS News. Lorincz was charged with “manslaughter with a firearm, a first-degree felony punishable by 30 years imprisonment, as well as culpable negligence, battery, and two counts of assault,” the sheriff’s release says. The suspect’s full name is Susan Louise Lorincz. Owens also went by the name AJ Owens.

In a news conference, Sheriff Billy Woods said the delay in charges was, in part, because there were children witnesses involved who needed to be interviewed. Owens’ mother said in a family news conference that Owens was unarmed. Woods said authorities had to contemplate the impact of Florida’s Stand Your Ground law on the case.

Here’s what you need to know:

1. When Authorities Responded to the Scene, They Found Ajike Owens Suffering From a Gunshot Wound in Front of the Apartment of Susan Lorincz, Sheriff’s Officials Say

On June 2, 2023, at approximately 9 p.m., “MCSO deputies were responding to a trespassing call in the 1600 block of SW 107th Lane in Ocala when another call was received about a shooting at the same location,” the sheriff’s office’s statement said.

“When deputies arrived, they located Owens in front of Lorincz’s apartment, suffering from a gunshot wound. Deputies rendered aid to Owens until Marion County Fire Rescue (MCFR) responded and transported her to HCA Florida Ocala Hospital, where she ultimately succumbed to her injuries,” the release said.

“The Major Crimes Unit responded to begin their investigation. That night, and during the days that followed, interviews were conducted with the witnesses to the shooting, including Owen’s children, who were interviewed yesterday by forensic interviewers from Kimberly’s Center who specialize in interviewing children,” the release said.

At a press conference in the days after the shooting, an attorney for Owens called for an arrest.

Pamela Dias, Owens’ mother, said at the news conference, “This young lady, my baby, was so full of life. She was a single mother of four.” She loved her children with “all her being,” Dias said. “Her kids were everything.”

2. Susan Lorincz Is Accused of Becoming Angry That Ajike Owens’ Children Were Playing in a Field Close to Her Home

ajike owens

GoFundMeAjike Owens.

Woods said “this has been a neighborhood feud over time.” Both Lorincz and Owens had called police before, Woods said. “I wish our shooter had called us instead of taking actions into her own hands. I wish Mrs. Owens would have called us,” Woods said.

According to the release, Lorincz “was also interviewed by detectives. In addition to these interviews, detectives also gathered and reviewed forensic evidence, digital evidence, and surveillance footage obtained from various sources. Detectives also reviewed details of prior incidents and calls for service involving Lorincz and Owens.”

The release from the sheriff’s office said that investigators determined that, over a period of time, Lorincz “had become angry at Owens’ children, who were playing in a field close to her home. On June 2, Lorincz engaged in an argument with the children and was overhead yelling at them by a neighbor.”

During this argument, Lorincz “threw a roller skate at Owens’ 10-year-old son, striking the child in the toe. After this, when the child and his 12-year-old brother went to speak to Lorincz, she opened her door and swung at them with an umbrella. The children then went and told their mother, Owens, about what had happened,” the release said.

Something may have been thrown at the kids, but authorities aren’t sure if it was thrown directly at them, although it hit the children, Woods, the sheriff, said at the news conference. He added that this information could change because authorities are still interviewing the children. Reporters asked whether an iPad was thrown and the sheriff said authorities are trying to rule that out or confirm it.

3. Susan Lorincz Shot Ajike Owens Through the Door After Owens ‘Knocked on the Door Multiple Times,’ Sheriff’s Officials Say

According to sheriff’s office officials, Owens “approached Lorincz’s home, knocked on the door multiple times, and demanded that Lorincz come outside. Lorincz then fired one shot through the door, striking Owens in her upper chest. At the time she was shot, Owens’ 10-year-old son was standing beside her.”

When interviewed, Lorincz “claimed that she acted in self-defense and that Owens had been trying to break down her door prior to her discharging her firearm. Lorincz also claimed that Owens had come after her in the past and had previously attacked her,” officials wrote.

“Through their investigation – including obtaining the statements of eyewitnesses who only came forward as late as yesterday – detectives were able to establish that Lorincz’s actions were not justifiable under Florida law,” the release said.

Woods said there were accusations of banging on the door and threats being made but that officials have only heard that from “one side.”

Dias said that four kids “are left behind without a mother.” She accused Susan Lorincz of taking “that voice.” She said that Owens “posed no imminent threat to anyone.” A family friend, Kimberly Robinson-Jones, said at the news conference that Lorincz, a “tenant,” had “no right” to tell the kids they couldn’t play in the field.

4. Ajike Owens Was Described as a ‘Devoted Christian,’ a Single Mother & a Team Mom ‘Whose Life Centered Around Her Children’

A GoFundMe page was set up to raise money for Owens’ children.

“Ajike Owens (affectionately known as AJ) graciously affected all she came into contact with her infectious personality. She had a smile that would A light up the room. But most of all, she was known for how much she loved and absolutely lived for her four children. To say she loved her children unconditionally is an understatement,” the page says.

“She was a single mother whose life centered around her children. She was the Team Mom for her children’s football/cheerleading teams. She excelled professionally as a manager in the Restaurant/Hospitality industry,” it adds.

“She was a devoted Christian who believed in bringing her kids up in a supportive Christian environment. After being a devoted mother, she was a devoted friend that took friendships to heart. There wasn’t anything that she wouldn’t do for those near and dear to her heart. She often would give to other single mothers that were in similar situations that she’d been in.”

“I want to thank my detectives for working tirelessly to fully investigate this case,” Sheriff Billy Woods said in the written statement.

“I also want to thank Ms. Owens’ family for their patience as we conducted the diligent investigation that we were bound by law to conduct. Ms. Lorincz’s fate is now in the hands of the judicial system, which I trust will deliver justice in due course. As I go to bed tonight, I will be saying a prayer for Ms. Owens’ children and the rest of her family. I’d ask all of you to do the same.”

5. Ajike Owens’ Mother Accused Susan Lorincz of Calling the Children Racist Slurs

In the news conference, Dias accused Lorincz of calling Owens’ children racist slurs in the past.

“Harassed the children in the neighborhood,” Dias said. “Harassed Ajike Shantrelle Owens’ four babies. She called them racial slurs: the N-word, slaves.”

“A closed, locked door,” Dias said. “Door never opened. My daughter, my grandchildren’s mother, was shot and killed with her nine-year-old son standing next to her.

At the sheriff’s office’s news conference, Woods said he received phone calls, text messages and emails expressing concerns about the shooting. To the family of Owens, he said he cares about the people who live in Marion County. He said he wanted the family to know he was there to provide all of his resources to find justice in this case.

“My heart goes to them,” he said, adding that there were also “young children who are victims.”

Spencer Pearson is an 18-year-old Florida high school football player who is accused of stabbing his ex-girlfriend Madison Schemitz as she dined at a restaurant with her mother in Ponte Vedra Beach on June 3, 2023, according to a GoFundMe page and the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Department.

The New York Post identified the victim as Madison Schemitz, a high school student.

“The suspect has been identified as Spencer Ross Pearson (DOB: 8/20/04). This incident was a targeted attack by Pearson who was known to the primary victim,” the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Department wrote in a post on its Facebook page.

Schemitz survived her wounds but has a long road to recovery, according to a GoFundMe page set up to help the 17 year old.

Here’s what you need to know:

1. Spencer Pearson, Who Posted About Madison Schemitz in His Instagram Story, Is Accused of Holding the Victim’s Arm While Stabbing Her 15 Times, Reports Say

According to News4Jax, citing an arrest warrant, when Schemitz and her mother entered Mr. Chubby’s Wings, they saw Pearson at a table in the restaurant and “tried to avoid him and leave.”

Pearson posted photos showing him with Schemitz to his Instagram story. “Missing you,” he wrote with one. “Someone God knew you needed.”

Another photo in the Instagram story proclaimed, “Ur Valentine!”

Pearson is accused of following them to the parking lot, where he “held the teen’s arm and stabbed her at least 15 times,” News4Jax reported.

The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Department called the attack an “attempted murder/attempted suicide” in the Facebook post.

On Saturday, June 3, 2023 at approximately 4:30 p.m., deputies with the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office “responded to a call for service in reference to a stabbing in the 100 block of Valley Circle in Ponte Vedra,” the statement says.

“The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit will continue their investigation,” it adds.

“Should the suspect survive his self-inflicted injuries, he will be charged with multiple felony charges, including attempted murder,” it adds. First Coast News reported that Pearson is still in the hospital.

News4Jax, citing an arrest warrant, reporting that Pearson is “facing two counts of attempted murder and one count of aggravated assault.”

2. The Sheriff Says 2 Other People Were Injured When They Tried to Help Madison Schemitz

According to the Sheriff’s Department release, bystanders tried to help Schemitz.

“Two other individuals were injured when they intervened to render aid to the primary victim. All parties involved were transported to local area hospitals with serious injuries sustained from sharp force trauma,” the release says.

In an earlier statement, the Sheriff’s Department wrote, “4 individuals sustained injuries and were transported to local area hospitals.”

The other victims were not named by authorities. However, News4Jax identified them as Schemitz’s mother, who was “stabbed in the leg and forehead.” The television station reported that Jimmy Stepp and Kennedy Armstrong, who stopped by the restaurant after work, intervened. According to the television station, Armstrong suffered a slashed hand.

3. Madison Schemitz Was Described as a ‘Star Softball Player’ in a GoFundMe Page Formed by ‘Ponte Vedra Moms’

According to the GoFundMe page set up to help Schemitz, “Ponte Vedra Beach moms are forming a group to help Madison Schemitz who was brutally attacked outside Mr. Chubby’s on Saturday June 3rd with her mom, Jacki Roge.”

The page continues,

Any amount you are willing to contribute is greatly appreciated by Jacki, Madison & Family. Thank you and please share.

In an update on the GoFundMe page, Schemitz’s mom wrote, “I am about to go into surgery, my muscles were severed from the bone on my hand. Madison has 2 chest tubes and a spinal cord injury but she’s a fighter, just please continue praying for her.”

A woman wrote in the GoFundMe page’s comment thread, “Madison is a warrior.”

4. Spencer Pearson Is Accused of ‘Harassing’ Madison Schemitz, Who Is Now Paralyzed, for 2 Months After They Broke Up

According to News4Jax, Pearson is accused of “harassing the 17-year-old victim for two months.” Tatiana Cruceta, Madison’s oldest sibling, told First Coast News that Schemitz and Pearson had dated but broke up a few months before the attack.

“There were some issues in the past after they’d broken up, where he was threatening her safety. My mother was looking to get a restraining order against him, so this was definitely premeditated,” Cruseda said to First Coast News. “Madison is a fighter, you know. She’s going to make it through this, and I know she is going to walk out of this hospital.”

Family members told First Coast News that Schemitz is now paralyzed.

5. Madison Schemitz’s Friend Described Seeing Spencer Pearson, a Former High School Football Player Who Was Wearing Clothing With a School Logo, Running Toward Schemitz in the Parking Lot

According to his Instagram page, Pearson was a high school football player.

Shemitz’s friend, Casey Estep, who was present during the attack, told First Coast News, “She’s like my soulmate as a sister, per se, as a friend.”

Estep and her daughter Cloey Criggall with “softball friends” with Schemitz and drove over to get something to eat with her.

“I saw a boy get up that had the same school logo on, I was like, ‘Oh, he must go to the same school,'” said Estep to First Coast News. “They were like, ‘Oh, we’ve got to go.’”

As Estep was paying the check, she saw the suspect “running toward the other three in the parking lot,” First Coast News reported.

“She did what any mother would and put herself in harm’s way,” said Estep of Schemitz’s mother, to First Coast News.

Former ‘American Idol’ Winner Laine Hardy Trying to Avoid Jail Time After Arrest https://heavy.com/entertainment/american-idol/laine-hardy-enters-program-avoiding-jail-time/ https://heavy.com/entertainment/american-idol/laine-hardy-enters-program-avoiding-jail-time/#respond Tue, 30 May 2023 15:10:34 +0000 https://heavy.com/?p=4448990

While season 17 “American Idol” winner Laine Hardy tries to breathe new life into his music career after a tumultuous year that included being arrested in April 2022 following accusations that he bugged an ex-girlfriend’s dorm room and parting ways with his record label, the Louisiana native is now working to start fresh.

The 22-year-old country crooner is nearly three months into a pretrial diversion program for nonviolent offenders, according to The Advocate, which could keep him from being formally charged and having to serve jail time. East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore called it “the best alternative to a very poor decision on [Hardy’s] part,” according to the outlet.

Here’s what you need to know:

What Did Laine Hardy Get Arrested For?

Laine Hardy

Hardy won “American Idol” at age 17 and hit the ground running with a record deal, world travel, debut album release, and several years of big-time appearances, including a dream-come-true debut at the Grand Ole Opry in 2021 and an appearance at the 2022 Rose Bowl Parade.

But on April 29, 2022, The Associated Press first reported, Hardy was arrested in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, “after being accused of putting a listening device in his ex-girlfriend’s college dorm room” at Louisiana State University (LSU). He was booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on one felony count for “interception and disclosure of wire, electronic or oral communication,” according to an April 27 LSU arrest warrant affidavit obtained by E! News, and was released without bail.

According to The Advocate, most of the recordings took place over several weeks that February, capturing private conversations between Hardy’s ex-girlfriend and her roommate, as well as phone calls with her mom, but the device wasn’t discovered until April. When the ex-girlfriend confronted Hardy, the documents showed, he admitted to bugging her room and she provided screenshots of his admission to the police.

In a since-deleted tweet, Hardy issued the following statement after his arrest, per Music Mayhem Magazine:

Earlier today, I received a warrant due to allegations made against me and have been fully cooperative with the Louisiana State University Police Department. I understand that my career has thrust me into the public spotlight, and I embrace that wholeheartedly as my entire world belongs to my music and my fans. However, due to the sensitive nature of this allegation, I humbly ask for privacy at this time. I have the utmost respect for the law and will assist in their investigation as needed moving forward.

In March 2023, according to The Advocate, Hardy began a “pretrial diversion program” via the East Baton Rouge District Attorney’s office. If he successfully completes the program, Moore told the outlet, he won’t be formally charged, meaning that he will have a clean record and avoid jail time. He was facing between two and 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000 if convicted.

What Kind of Program Does Laine Hardy Have to Complete?

Moore told The Advocate that prosecutors had worked with Hardy and his attorney over the past year and coordinated with the victim — Hardy’s ex-girlfriend — about different ways to resolve the case. Since the arrest was Hardy’s first offense and was nonviolent, the paper reported, he was a good candidate for the pretrial diversion program.

“We just felt that under the circumstances, and after consultation with the victim, that this was the best alternative to a very poor decision on his part,” Moore said.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, pretrial diversion (PTD) programs “divert certain offenders from traditional criminal justice processing into alternative systems of supervision and services. PTD programs provide prosecutors with another tool – in addition to the traditional criminal justice process – to ensure accountability for criminal conduct, protect the public by reducing rates of recidivism, conserve prosecutive and judicial resources, and provide opportunities for treatment, rehabilitation, and community correction.”

The program Hardy is participating in is designed to help offenders make better decisions in the future, Moore told The Advocate. The expectations and goals of the program are made on a case-by-case basis for each person by program coordinators, but “they often include community service and targeted behavior management courses,” the outlet reported.

“When you get into diversion, you’re diverted out of system,” Moore explained. “You’re not formally charged and if you complete all of the conditions, you will not be formally charged ever.”

Before entering the program, according to The Advocate, Hardy was first evaluated for any conditions he may suffer from and to try to determine the “root causes of his behavior and what treatments can help him.”

The City of Baton Rouge’s description of its pretrial program says participants are assigned an officer who becomes their point of contact, monitoring their progress toward the requirements set to complete the program. Hardy enrolled in early March and it’s expected to take “a minimum of six months to a year to finish,” according to Music Mayhem Magazine. Once he completes the program, “he can petition the court to have the arrest removed from his criminal record, according to the DA,” The Advocate reported.

Can Laine Hardy Keep Performing While Completing His Pretrial Program?

The program Hardy is enrolled in doesn’t keep him from working on his music, including booking occasional performances or appearing on “American Idol,” which he did during the season 21 auditions that aired in March.

He’s been writing new material and working as an independent artist since he parted ways with his record label in Fall 2022, after working with the label since his “Idol” win.

In a post on Instagram, he wrote, “I was just 17 years old when I first tried out for American Idol, and at the time, I couldn’t have ever imagined where I was headed. Since then, I’ve been able to tour across America, play for our Troops in Asia, and make new fans in Europe. I had to grow up quickly and I am still learning more about myself every day.”

Hardy continued, “The teams at 19 Entertainment and Disney Music Group have given me so much support and guidance, and I will forever be grateful. And now it’s time for me to take my career in a new direction and I am figuring that out. Stay tuned for what’s coming next. Love y’all.”

In early May, he was a featured performer at Heritage Days in Liberty, Mississippi, alongside The Band Hardy — a group he formed with one of his brothers, their cousin Casey Hardy, and a couple of friends before he hit it big on “Idol,” according to The Democrat. Many fans shared photos on the event’s Facebook page, and his cousin posted a collection of pics from the recent concert.

In addition to Liberty Days, Hardy periodically performs concerts and shares acoustic versions of old tunes or new recordings via Instagram. He still has a passionate fan base, including a Facebook fan group with over 30,000 members.

Teen Hacker Stole $600,000 From DraftKings Accounts: Feds https://heavy.com/sports/joseph-garrison-draftkings-hack/ https://heavy.com/sports/joseph-garrison-draftkings-hack/#comments Thu, 18 May 2023 23:05:59 +0000 https://heavy.com/?p=4438695

Joseph Garrison is a Wisconsin teen accused of hacking into DraftKings accounts and stealing at least $600,000, federal authorities say.

Garrison, 18, of Madison, Wisconsin, was arrested on May 18, 2023, on six charges, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York announced in a statement.

Federal prosecutors say Garrison hacked accounts on the fantasy sports and betting website and then sold access to those accounts along with instructions on how to drain money from them. DraftKings isn’t named in court documents, but screenshots in the criminal complaint show the site’s interface and details match previous disclosures by the company about a hack that targeted its users.

Garrison and others were able to get into 60,000 DraftKings accounts, prosecutors said. They were able to steal about $600,000 from 1,600 victims, according to prosecutors.

“As alleged, Garrison used a credential stuffing attack to hack into the accounts of tens of thousands of victims and steal hundreds of thousands of dollars,” U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said in a statement. “Today, thanks to the work of my Office and the FBI, Garrison learned that you shouldn’t bet on getting away with fraud.”

Garrison was charged with conspiracy to commit computer intrusions, unauthorized access to a protected computer to further intended fraud, unauthorized access to a protected computer, wire fraud conspiracy, wire fraud and aggravated identity theft, federal prosecutors said.

He made his first court appearance in Manhattan on May 18 and was released on $100,000 bond, court records show. His mother will serve as a “third party custodian,” according to court records.

Garrison and his attorney could not immediately be reached for comment by Heavy.

A DraftKings spokesperson said in a statement to Heavy, “The safety and security of our customers’ personal and payment information is of paramount importance to DraftKings. We worked with law enforcement in catching the alleged bad actor(s), and we want to thank the Department of Justice, including the FBI and U.S. Attorney, Southern District of New York, for their prompt and effective action.”

The spokesperson added, “As we stated previously, bad actor(s) were able use login credentials obtained from a third-party source to gain access to certain user accounts. When the identified credential stuffing incident occurred in November 2022, DraftKings provided notice to customers in relevant jurisdictions and restored amounts for a limited number of users who may have had funds improperly withdrawn from their accounts.”

Joseph Garrison Wrote in a Message to a Co-Conspirator ‘Fraud Is Fun,’ According to Court Documents

According to the criminal complaint written by FBI Special Agent Michael Gassert, Joseph Garrison began hacking DraftKings accounts in November 2022. He used a method known as “credential stuffing.”

Garrison also targeted FanDuel accounts, records show, but details on whether any money was stolen from the other sports betting and fantasy website were not included in the court documents.

Gassert wrote, “During a credential stuffing attack, a cyber threat actor collects stolen credentials, or username and password pairs, obtained from other large-scale data breaches of other companies, which can be purchased on the darkweb. The threat actor then systematically attempts to use those stolen credentials to obtain unauthorized access to accounts held by the same user with other companies and providers, in order to compromise accounts where the user has maintained the same password.”

According to the complaint, DraftKings notified law enforcement in November 2022 that working log-in credentials the company had verified were available for purchase on “several illicit websites.” On November 21, 2022, Action Network’s Darren Rovell reported on DraftKings users who were seeing money being drained from their accounts.

DraftKings’ co-founder Paul Lieberman told Action Network they “made whole” any users who lost money, adding, “We currently believe that the login information of these customers was compromised on other websites and then used to access their DraftKings accounts where they used the same login information. We have seen no evidence that DraftKings’ systems were breached to obtain this information.”

DraftKings employees tried to verify the hack by purchasing stolen credentials, according to the complaint. They then received instructions on how to steal money from the accounts they bought, according to the complaint.

Gassert included messages Garrison sent to unnamed co-conspirators in the complaint, including one in which the teen wrote, “fraud is fun. … im addicted to see money in my account. … idk im like obsessed with bypassing s***.”

The FBI Says Garrison Made More Than $2 Million Selling Hacked Accounts on a Website Called ‘Goat Shop’

According to the criminal complaint, the FBI discovered Joseph Garrison had previously run a website he called the “Goat Shop,” where he sold hacked accounts.

In June 2022, during an interview with police in Madison, Wisconsin, Garrison said he hacked the accounts himself and then sold him, according to the complaint.

Garrison said that from 2018 to 2021 he made about $15,000 per day while selling hacked accounts on the website and had made about $800,000. Police found a photo on Garrison’s phone showing the Goat Shop sold more than 225,000 products with a total sales revenue of $2,135,150.09, according to the complaint.

Joseph Garrison Is Also Facing Charges in Wisconsin in Connection to Bomb Threats & ‘Swatting’ Calls to Schools in Multiple States

Joseph Garrison is also facing charges in Dane County, Wisconsin, after he was accused of calling in bomb threats and making “swatting” calls to schools in Madison and in other states.

Garrison was arrested in August 2022 on bomb scare and making terrorist threats charges in Wisconsin, court records show. He was 17 at the time. Garrison is free on bond in that case. He has pleaded not guilty.

According to a Madison Police Department press release, Garrison made several threats to Vel Phillips Memorial High School from February to April 2022. He also made threatening calls to schools in Texas and Pennsylvania, according to court records.

Police said in a criminal complaint obtained by WISC-TV, Garrison admitted he used Bitcoin to pay people to make the threats.

“According to police, Garrison made arrangements for the initial call at Memorial High because he was bored and did not want to be at school. He also allegedly told investigators he had money to pay for the threats because he ran an online store where he sold hacked passwords for online accounts. Garrison said at the site’s peak, it was making $15,000 a day, and at one point he had around $800,000 in his account,” the news station wrote.

Dennis Bell is a 62-year-old Lanham, Maryland, man who is accused of kidnapping a woman at a Washington D.C. convenience store while driving a U-Haul truck, according to the Maryland State Police.

In a news release, Maryland State Police said they arrested a Prince George’s County man for kidnapping, identifying him as Bell. The woman was not identified.

Here’s what you need to know:

Dennis Bell Is Accused of 14 Criminal Charges Including False Imprisonment & a Sex Offense

Maryland State Police wrote in the news release that they “arrested a Prince George’s County man for kidnapping and other related charges after conducting a felony traffic stop last night in Lanham.”

The accused “is identified as Dennis Bell, 62, of Lanham. Bell faces 14 criminal charges including first degree assault, kidnapping, false imprisonment, fourth degree sex offense, possession of suspected crack cocaine and driving while impaired. Bell is also facing 19 traffic charges related to the incident,” they wrote, adding, “Bell is currently being held at the Upper Marlboro Department of Corrections.”

Police noted: “The victim is not being identified at this time. She was transported from the scene by emergency medical service personnel to an area hospital for medical treatment.”

No obvious social media accounts could be found for Bell.

Dennis Bell Is Accused of Pushing the Woman Into a U-Haul Truck at a Convenience Store in Washington D.C.

According to the police news release, the preliminary investigation “indicates Bell was driving a U-Haul truck when he allegedly made contact with the victim at a convenience store on Minnesota Avenue Southeast in Washington, D.C. yesterday morning. The victim told police that Bell pushed her into the U-Haul truck and threatened her life if she did not comply with his demands.”

The release continued:

Bell reportedly drove around all day with the victim sitting on the floor board in the front seat. The victim reported that while in Bell’s truck, he removed her clothing and used a pocket knife to stab her fingers. The victim informed police that she did not know where she was throughout the day while Bell continued to drive.

At approximately 9:45 p.m. last night, troopers from the College Park Barrack received multiple calls from motorists reporting a U-Haul truck driving erratically and striking multiple parked vehicles while traveling in the area of Princess Garden Parkway in Lanham. Maryland State Police immediately dispatched to the area and located the U-Haul truck on Route 450 in Lanham.

Police attempted a felony traffic stop on the U-Haul. The driver of the U-Haul, later identified as Bell, refused to stop for police. A pursuit ensued and ended at Baltimore Avenue and Elm Street in Lanham where the vehicle became disabled in a ditch.

Two troopers approached the passenger side of the U-Haul to make contact with Bell. He refused to exit the vehicle after multiple verbal requests. The troopers were able to gain entry into the vehicle through the passenger side window and discovered the victim. She was without clothing and sitting on the floor board in the front seat with apparent wounds to her fingers.

Police immediately rescued the woman and covered her with an agency issued jacket. Emergency medical service personnel responded to the scene and transported her by ambulance to the hospital.

Bell was uncooperative and refused to identify himself. He was arrested on the scene and transported to the hospital. He was later transported to the Upper Marlboro Department of Corrections.

According to police, troopers from the Forestville Barrack and College Park Barrack “responded to the scene. Officers from the Prince George’s County Police Department and the Metropolitan Police Department provided assistance. The Maryland State Police Criminal Enforcement Division continues the investigation.”

“Anyone who may have witnessed the alleged kidnapping or has relevant information regarding the investigation is urged to contact the Criminal Enforcement Division via email at william.costello@maryland.gov or contact the College Park Barrack. All calls and emails may remain confidential,” police wrote.

According to the police release, “minutes later, she battered a 34-year-old female with said bat in the 3000 block of W. Cullom (17th District.) The offender is also charged in connection to the May 7, 2023, batteries of a 19-year-old female in the 4000 block of W. Lawrence and of a 33-year-old female in the 4200 block of W. Richmond. The offender was placed into custody and charged accordingly.”

WGN-TV reported that eight women were attacked overall, five with a bat, but the police news release doesn’t mention all of those.

2. Denise Solorzano Is Accused of Asking a Victim, ‘What Would You Do if I Hit You With This Bat’?

According to ABC 7 Chicago, prosecutors said in court that Solorzano asked the victims either “What would you do if I hit you with this bat?” or “What would do you do if I punch you in the face?”

The news release does not specify a motive. She is being held on $800,000 bond, according to WGN-TV.

Public records show past addresses for Solorzano in Virginia, Michigan, and Illinois. It was not immediately clear whether she has active Facebook or Instagram accounts.

3. Denise Solorzano Is Accused of Pulling a Woman’s Hair & Punching Her in the Face

According to WGN-TV, in the first incident, Solorzano is accused of leaping out of a white Subaru Sedan and then punching a woman, 33, multiple times while telling her, “I’m going to beat your a**.”

An hour later, she is accused of telling a woman, 19, from behind, “What would you do if I punched you in the face?” WGN reported.

According to WGN, Solorzao is accused of pulling that woman’s hair and striking her. Chicago police initiated and then suspended a pursuit, but they did get Solorzano’s plate number, WGN reported, adding that she is also accused of telling a dog walker, “What would happen if I bashed you with this bat?”

She’s also accused of trying to hit a woman with her Subaru six times, WGN reported.

4. Video Shows Denise Solorzano Swinging the Bat, Reports Say

Video shows one of the attacks.

Shannon Condon told ABC 7 Chicago that she saw the Mozart Street attack, which is the one in the video. According to what Condon told ABC 7 Chicago, she witnessed two women with a stroller and baby when a woman with a bat exited a car and walked toward them.

“I thought she must know them or something, or maybe she was playing a joke on them, and then I saw the woman with the bat start hitting the ladies over and over again, and the ladies were screaming,” Condon told ABC 7.

Condon told the television station that the suspect then got back into her car and left the scene.

According to WGN, Solorzano struck both women in the arms.

5. One of the Women Who Was Attacked Called the Incident ‘Very, Very Strange’

The woman attacked on Richmond Street told Block Club Chicago that she did not know Solorzano.

She told the site that the incident was “just very, very strange.”

“She said, ‘You know? Do you want me to beat your a**?’ or ‘You want me to kick your a** or something?’” The woman said to the news site. “And I was obviously like, ‘No, please don’t. Who are you?’ But I mean, by that point she was already laying into me, and 60 seconds later and it was over. So it’s just very, very strange.”

Kouri Darden Richins & Husband Eric Richins: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know https://heavy.com/news/kouri-eric-richins/ https://heavy.com/news/kouri-eric-richins/#respond Tue, 09 May 2023 16:14:40 +0000 https://heavy.com/?p=4428284

Kouri Darden Richins is a Utah mother of three and author of a children’s book on grieving who is accused of fatally poisoning her husband, Eric Richins, with fentanyl that authorities say was slipped into a Moscow Mule drink, according to court records.

Kouri Richins, 33, was charged on May 9, 2023, with aggravated murder, a first-degree felony, and three counts of second-degree felony possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance, according to a Summit County, Utah, court docket. She is scheduled to make her first court appearance on May 19, 2023, for a detention hearing, records show.

Eric Richins died on March 4, 2022, at the age of 39, according to his obituary, which says he “made his last extravagant and largely unexpected gesture on March 4, 2022, signing off on a life, in his own words, ‘lived to the fullest and with few regrets.'” According to KPCW, the Richins family “is one of the oldest and largest in Summit County,” Utah. “A notable member was Sheldon Richins, for whom Summit County’s Richins Building in Kimball Junction is named.”

The Summit County court docket lists the date of the murder charge as March 3, 2022, with the drug-charge dates as January 1, 2022; February 11, 2022; and February 26, 2022.

“Life is just so d*** hard without you here,” Kouri Richins posted in a Facebook reel that showed photos of her with Eric Richins. “The cards I have been dealt seems like a game that just can’t be played.” She included the hashtag #pleasecomehome with Eric Richins’ name.

“My husband passed away unexpectedly last year,” Richins said during an appearance on a local television show to promote her new children’s book on grief, the video, obtained by Daily Mail, shows. “It completely took us all by shock,” she said, adding that “my kids and I kind of wrote this book on the different emotions and grieving processes that we’ve experienced the last year.” She said they hoped it could “help other kids.”

To help with grief, she said, she came up with a concept called the “three Cs,” defined as “connection, continuity and care.” She said in the video that it’s important that the deceased loved one’s “spirit is always alive in your home.” She said it’s important for her kids to know that “Dad is still here; it’s just in a different way.”

Here’s what you need to know:

1. Eric Richins Was Found Deceased ‘at the Foot of His Bed’ After His Wife Made Him a Moscow Mule, Authorities Say

Kouri Richins

According to the probable cause statement, Richins was also charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute.

The court records say that at 3:22 a.m. on March 4, 2022, Summit County sheriff’s Deputies and EMS staff responded to the couple’s residence in Summit County for a report “of an unresponsive male.”

They found Eric Richins “on the floor at the foot of his bed.” Life-saving measures were unsuccessful, the documents say.

During interviews with Kouri Richins, she stated that, at around 9 p.m. on March 3, 2022, she and Eric were “celebrating the defendant’s closing on a house for her business. Defendant stated that she made Eric a Moscow Mule in the kitchen and brought it to their bedroom, where Eric consumed it while sitting on bed,” the records say.

The only people in the house were Kouri, Eric and their children, according to the court documents, which say that Kouri told police she went to bed with one of the children in a child’s bedroom because “that child was having a night terror.”

She told police that she awoke around 3 a.m. and came back to her and Eric’s bedroom. “She felt Eric, and he was cold to the touch,” so she called 911, the court documents say.

The court documents say that an autopsy showed that Eric Richins “died from an overdose of fentanyl” that was “approximately five times the lethal dosage” and was “illicit fentanyl and not medical grade fentanyl.” The medical examiner believed it was “ingested orally.”

2. Authorities Say Eric Richins Told a Friend He Believed His Wife Tried to Poison Him on Valentine’s Day & Told His Sister He Believed She Tried to Kill Him With a Drink in Greece

Eric Richins

A search warrant was obtained for the couple’s residence and electronic devices.

The court documents say that authorities identified a person named C.L. as an “acquaintance” of Kouri Richins who had multiple counts of drug dealing and paraphernalia charges in the past.

This acquaintance told police that between December 2021 and February 2022, the defendant texted C.L. and asked if C.L. could get the defendant “some prescription pain medication for an investor who had a back injury?” the court documents say.

C.L. obtained hydrocodone pills from a dealer, and Kouri Richins is accused of asking C.L. to leave the pills at a house she was “flipping in Midway,” the records say. She left cash, the court records say.

About two weeks later, she contacted C.L. again and asked for something stronger, specifically for “some of the Michael Jackson stuff,” asking for fentanyl, the records say.

C.L. gave Kouri Richins 15-30 fentanyl pills and delivered them to her for $900, the documents say.

Three days later, on February 14, 2022, Eric and Kouri Richins had a Valentine’s Day dinner together, and Eric became “very ill” shortly after the dinner, according to the court records. He “believed that he had been poisoned. Eric told a friend that he thought his wife was trying to poison him,” the records show.

About two weeks later, Kouri Richins contacted C.L. again asking for another $900 of fentanyl pills, which C.L. procured, leaving them at an outdoor fire pit of the Midway home, the records say. On March 4, 2022, Eric was found dead of the fentanyl overdose.

Kouri Richins told police she left her phone behind in the couple’s bedroom while she was in a child’s bedroom the night her husband died, but phone records indicated that messages were being deleted and there was movement on the phone, the court records say.

According to KPCW, warrants also indicate that Eric’s family members told investigators that they believed Kouri killed him and “he warned them that if anything happened to him, she was to blame.” Furthermore, fire and EMS first responders questioned Kouri’s claim that she performed CPR on him, the station reported, and said she told them she did not know where Eric’s medications were because “the maid just puts medications in random places.” She also claimed that her husband “had a pain pill addiction in high school but no substance abuse issues since,” the station reported.

According to KPCW, Eric Richins’ sister “told investigators he had called her a few years ago from Greece. While he and Kouri were on vacation, a drink she handed him made him violently ill. The sister alleged Eric believed Kouri had tried to kill him.”

The station also reported that Kouri Richins changed her husband’s life insurance policy in January 2022, removing his masonry business co-owner as a beneficiary and adding herself instead. According to the station, though, Eric Richins changed the policy to remove his wife and was planning to file for divorce. He told his sister he feared Kouri Richins would “kill him for the money,” KPCW reported.

According to KPCW, Kouri wanted to purchase a $2 million home to flip, but Eric disapproved, and she closed on the home the day after his death, even inviting friends over for what a search warrant called “a large party at her home where she was drinking and celebrating.” At the home, she “assaulted” his sister, KPCW wrote, citing a search warrant.

“Up until that point, according to the family, Kouri had no idea she had been replaced in the will and Eric’s sister was put in charge of his estate, including the home, which made her financially unstable,” the warrant states, according to KPCW, which added that Kouri Richins then sued her sister-in-law for control of the estate.

As a book that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit, “Are You With Me” is a must-read for any child who has experienced the pain of loss, and for parents who want to provide their children with the emotional support they need to heal and grow.

A story of hope, healing, and the unbreakable bond between parent and child…

The book was released in March 2023, about a year after Richins’ death. Kouri Richins appeared on television to promote it:

According to Mountain Express Magazine, Kouri Richins had also worked for her own realty company, although the website for it is now inactive. A cache for the website lists Richins’ name and says “dream home finder.”

In 2010, she registered a housekeeping company with the state called “Kouri Darden Housekeeping Services.” An old LinkedIn page says she also worked as an administrative assistant at a hospital and as an “Enhanced Patient Services and Specialty Clinic Trainer” at Park City Medical Center. “At an early age, Eric learned the joys of keeping horses and cows around. He spent countless hours helping his dad work the ranch, hauling hay, feeding the animals, and mending fences. He loved his family unconditionally, and was a devoted son, brother, and uncle,” the obit says.

It calls Richie “a family man, who always strove to be the absolute best father and husband,” describing him as a father of three sons, ages 9, 7 and 5.

“Eric loved fully, laughed loudly, and lived life with reckless abandon. He enjoyed great adventures to far off places, but also cherished the small and finer things in life like his Under Armour sweat suits and spending time with his family and friends. No obstacle was too great for Rico, he simply viewed each one as a challenge. No peaks were too high and the next adventure was always just around the next bend,” the obituary says.

It says that he was an athlete growing up, a coach to his boys’ teams, an “avid outdoorsman and dedicated hunter,” as well as an “excellent archer and marksman” who had hunted trophy animals around the world.

“There was never a dull moment when you were around Eric. Whether it be him showing up to a family dinner with no socks or sleeves on his shirt because he had to make an emergency bathroom stop along the way or his calling to tell you he rolled the four-wheeler for the umpteenth time, is stuck, and needs you to come get him,” the obit says.

The obit says that Richins was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who served a mission to Mexico City. “He built a very successful masonry business from the ground up and helped many friends do the same,” the obit says.

Jeremiah D. Johnson: Deputy Kaitie Leising Shooting Suspect Named https://heavy.com/news/jeremiah-d-johnson-kaitie-leising/ https://heavy.com/news/jeremiah-d-johnson-kaitie-leising/#respond Mon, 08 May 2023 04:38:19 +0000 https://heavy.com/?p=4407824

Jeremiah D. Johnson was identified as the 34-year-old convicted rapist accused of shooting and killing St. Croix County Sheriff’s Deputy Kaitie Leising, in Wisconsin on May 6, 2023, according to the Wisconsin Department of Justice.

Heavy has learned that Johnson, who authorities say died by a self-inflicted gunshot wound, was a convicted rapist and kidnapper out of Minnesota who once made the news when he abducted and then sexually assaulted an intoxicated woman off the street in Saint Paul, Minnesota, on July 5, 2015, after Fourth of July celebrations. He received 6 years and 5 months in prison in Minnesota in November 2015, on a guilty plea of kidnapping and third-degree criminal sexual conduct, according to Minnesota court records.

He was also required to register “as a predatory sexual offender for 10 years,” according to court records. According to the Minnesota Bureau of Apprehension, Johnson had been under community supervision since October 28, 2019, after he was released from prison. His supervision, which was being handled by Scott County Community Corrections, was set to expire October 28, 2029.

A law enforcement source confirmed that the man who shot and killed Leising is that same man; in addition, Johnson’s family members and friends have posted extensively about his death on Facebook, with his aunt declaring it a “sudden, unsuspected death” in a post.

The DOJ said Leising was 29. The slain officer was praised in tributes.

“Kaitlin was an outstanding law enforcement officer, positively impacting many in our county.” Pennington County Sheriff Brian Mueller wrote in a news release about Leising, who had worked on that department. “Most importantly, she was an outstanding human being.”

A woman wrote in a comment thread on Facebook, “Katie was the most caring, always smiling, respectful person ever. Left behind a spouse and new little baby. Just starting her life.”

Julie Lee wrote on Facebook: “Gutted… over-whelmed by grief… so much life yet to live… our families’ hearts smashed to pieces…” She wrote that Leising left behind a “precious new son, Syler.” She concluded the post, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Matthew 5:9.”

Leising was fatally wounded in the Township of Glenwood, Wisconsin, according to a press release from the Wisconsin Department of Justice.

“The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is investigating an officer involved critical incident in the township of Glenwood, Wis. that occurred on the evening of Saturday, May 6, 2023,” the release said.

Two other northern Wisconsin law enforcement officers, from Chetek and Cameron, were shot and killed in April 2023: Emily Breidenbach and Hunter Scheel. Those deaths also occurred during a traffic stop.

Here’s what you need to know about Jeremiah Johnson and the shooting of Deputy Kaitie Leising:

1. Jeremiah Johnson Committed a ‘Stranger’ Abduction in Minnesota, Raping an Intoxicated 18-Year-Old Woman, According to Court Records

jeremiah d. johnson

Facebook (Jeremiah Johnson)Jeremiah D. Johnson

In a probable cause statement filed before his sentencing, a Stillwater Police officer wrote that the Saint Paul Police Department was dispatched to a report of an intoxicated woman.

The caller told police the woman was lying on a sidewalk and was not able to give her name, so he called 911. He said, “that when he turned around, a green Chevrolet pickup truck pulled up and a white male in his 20s got out and made contact with the female. … the male picked up the female and put her in his truck.” The caller told police the driver, later identified as Johnson, then “drove away fast, almost hitting another vehicle,” court records show.

A witness told police that he saw a man walking from a green truck up to a woman who appeared to be unconscious. The man had a hoodie pulled over his head, according to the court records. The witness said the man picked up the woman “and carried her to his green truck,” adding that the woman was “limp and lifeless,” while she was being picked up. The witness tried to confront the man, but he backed out of a parking space and sped away with the truck’s headlights off, police said. The witness gave police a license plate number and investigators tracked that to a man who said he sold the truck to Jeremiah Johnson, court records show.

Stillwater and Saint Paul Police went to Johnson’s apartment building and saw a vehicle matching the description parked outside, court records show. Police said the victim was found in a common hallway of Johnson’s apartment complex, and she was “frightened and confused” and didn’t know where she was, according to the affidavit. The woman told police the last thing she remembered was watching fireworks, and she then “woke up on an air mattress with her bra and underwear on next to a guy she didn’t know.”

Johnson told police he “wanted to help” the woman becaus she sprained her ankle. “The defendant stated that she walked over to his truck, and he helped her in. The defendant stated that she was ‘drunk’ and began to vomit. The defendant acknowledges other parties who were attempting to assist her. The defendant stated she walked to the truck with his assistance. The defendant stated that the female couldn’t give her address so he took her to his apartment in Stillwater,” police wrote in the affidavit. “The defandant initially denied any sexual contact.”

The defendant eventually admitted he “tried to do a little something, but it didn’t work,” the court records say.

According to the affidavit, Johnson told police he was drinking but “wasn’t that drunk,” and then said, “Say we did have sex, she is 18 and there is nothing illegal about that,” and added that he, “always wanted to do an Asian girl … now that I picked one up, I got arresed.”

Johnson, a then-26-year-old Stillwater, Minnesota, resident, was charged with kidnapping and criminal sexual conduct, court records show. “It’s an extremely serious crime,” Stillwater Police Sergeant Jeff Stender told the St. Paul Pioneer Press in 2015. “Realistically, stranger abductions are very rare here in Minnesota. St. Paul police took it extremely seriously and were able to come up with a suspect, and we were able to get the victim back safely and arrest the suspect.”

According to Minnesota court records viewed by Heavy, Johnson was released on $400,000 bail after his arrest. He pleaded guilty on November 16, 2015, to kidnapping and third-degree criminal sexual conduct, court records show. He was sentenced to a total of 77 months in prison, with credit for 135 days he had served.

2. Jeremiah Johnson Was Convicted of Domestic Abuse in 2014 & Second-Degree Assault in 2007 & Had Several Other Run-Ins With Police in Minnesota, Including Multiple Traffic Offenses Since His Release From Prison in 2019

Washington County SheriffJeremiah Daniel Johnson.

Minnesota court records viewed by Heavy reveal 22 cases involving Jeremiah Johnson in that state, including the rape case, dating back to 2006. Some of those run-ins with police include traffic stops and minor offenses that occurred in 2020 and 2021, after his release from state prison and while he was on community supervision, records show.

Johnson was first arrested in November 2006 and eventually convicted of careless driving, records show. In December 2007, Johnson was arrested in Stillwater, Minnesota in Washington County and charged with second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon, a felony. He pleaded guilty to a gross misdmeanor assault charge in 2008 and was sentenced to serve 23 days in jail. In 2009, he was sent back to jail in that case because of a probation violation, court records show.

In March 2009, Johnson was charged with DWI, refusing to submit to a chemical test, and failing to stop for a traffic accident with damage to property, along with other traffic offenses, records show. He was convicted of the DWI charge, according to court records. In May 2009, he was charged and later convicted of giving a police officer a false name, court records show.

On May 5, 2014, Johnson was arrested and charged with domestic abuse after he was accused of violating a protective order, along with interfering with an officer. Those cases were dismissed, records show. But on May 14, 2014, Johnson was again arrested in Anoka County and charged with domestic abuse (violate a no contact order within 10 years of previous conviction). He was convicted of that gross misdmeanor charge on May 20, 2014, and sentenced to serve a year in jail, court records show.

After Johnson was released from prison in the rape case in October 2019, his run-ins with police in Minnesota continued, court records show. He was cited for speeding in Ramsey County on February 21, 2021, after he was accused of driving 96 miles per hour in a 55 miles per hour zone, court records show. He was also convicted of a seat belt violation in November 2021 and speeding (going 82 in a 55) in May 2022, records show.

3. Kaitie Leising Was Dispatched for a Report of a ‘Potential Drunk Driver in a Ditch,’ Where She Encountered Jeremiah D. Johnson, the DOJ Says

The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) wrote in the news release that, at approximately 6:15 p.m. on May 6, 2023, St. Croix County Sheriff’s Deputy Kaitie Leising, age 29, “with approximately 3 years of law enforcement service, was dispatched for a report of a potential drunk driver in a ditch.”

Upon arrival at the scene, “Deputy Leising encountered the driver of the vehicle in a ditch along with another vehicle of individuals that stopped to assist the individual. Deputy Leising requested the individual, Jeremiah D. Johnson, age 34, participate in field sobriety tests before returning to his vehicle.”

According to the release, Johnson “was evasive to Deputy Leising’s requests and after approximately 8 minutes of dialogue, Johnson turned toward Deputy Leising, drew a handgun and shot her. After being struck, Deputy Leising discharged her weapon three times, but none of the rounds hit Johnson before he fled to the nearby wooded area. This incident was captured on body camera.”

4. Jeremiah Johnson Ran a Landscaping Business After He Got Out of Prison, According to His Facebook Page

Jeremiah Johnson

Facebook (Jeremiah Johnson)Jeremiah Johnson

On Facebook, Johnson, who was married, shared a business card showing he had started a junk, leaf, and snow yard service in Minnesota.

His brother, aunt and other family members posted photos of him or comments about him on Facebook after death. Those posts did not mention the officer’s shooting or death.

On July 4, 2015, the same day he was accused of raping an unconscious woman, Johnson posted a meme on Facebook about the Confederate flag. The meme said, “People came together to have this pulled down … can we also come together to have these pulled up,” with a photo of the flag and a photo of sagging jeans. Also in 2015, he posted a meme that asked why white pride is racist, his page shows.

In June 2015, Johnson posted a meme on Facebook from Minnesota Gun Rights, a group he supported, that showed a handgun with the caption, “Because I can’t throw a rock at 1115 feet per second.”

5. Kaitie Leising, Who Died at a Local Hospital, Leaves Behind a Wife & Young Child

Kaitie Leising left behind a young family. “Deputy Leising started with the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office in 2022 and previously served 2 years with the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office in South Dakota,” the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Memorial wrote on Facebook. “Deputy Leising is survived by her wife and young child, her parents, and a sibling. The WLM Board of Directors extends their deepest sympathies to her family, friends, and the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the DOJ, the “occupants of the assisting vehicle immediately began lifesaving measures on Deputy Leising, who was transported to a local hospital where she died.”

“Additional officers responded and began searching the wooded area near the scene. Approximately an hour after Deputy Leising had been shot, a law enforcement officer observed Johnson, heard a gunshot, and witnessed him collapse to the ground. During the search for Johnson no law enforcement discharged their weapons. A handgun was recovered at the scene where Johnson was located deceased,” the news release says.

DOJ added: “There is no threat to the community.”

DCI wrote that it “is leading this investigation and is assisted by numerous neighboring law enforcement agencies, Wisconsin State Patrol, Wisconsin State Crime Lab and a DCI Crime Response Specialist. All involved law enforcement are fully cooperating with DCI during this investigation.

The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a Facebook tribute that Deputy Kaitlin Leising “was shot and killed during a traffic stop in St. Croix County, Wisconsin, on Saturday, May 6, 2023. Leising was on a call investigating the report of a drunk driver.”

Leising “was a former Pennington County Deputy, leaving in 2022 for Wisconsin. The 29-year-old served with the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office from February 2020 until January 2022. In the last five months with the PCSO, Leising was a Contract Deputy in Hill City,” the department wrote.

The release continued: “Mueller points out the dangers that can exist with every traffic stop: “We thank the men and women who serve and put their lives on the line every single day. Our hearts break with the loss of this brave Deputy. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Kaitlin’s family at this difficult time.”

“After reviewing the surveillance footage, agents saw that White arrived at the restaurant, got his manager, Amia Smith, to come to the door. White shot Smith, killing her. White is then seen entering the restaurant where he takes his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot,” the release adds.

“The two other female victims, both in separate homes, were related to White, according to interviews with witnesses,” it says.

According to WALB-TV, the relatives were Smith’s grandmother, 74, and his mother, 50.

“The GBI Crime Lab will perform the autopsies in this investigation,” GBI wrote. “This is an active and ongoing investigation. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the GBI Thomasville Field Office at 229-225-4090 or the Moultrie Police Department. Anonymous tips can be submitted by calling 1-800-597-TIPS (8477), online at https://gbi.georgia.gov/submit-tips-online, or by downloading the See Something, Send Something mobile app.”

On the morning of the shooting, White wrote on his Facebook page that he was molested by two relatives. He added in the post, ” sorry for y’all lost blame yourself.”

It’s the last post visible on his page and was written at 2:08 a.m.

One of the people he tagged in that post responded in his own Facebook post, writing:

Being in prison for 2 years and hearing that your own flesh and blood has done the impossible to family is killing me, literally. I don’t know where my little brother’s mindset was, if he was on anything, or what he was going through but I know this wasn’t him at all. I’ve NEVER molested or even touched my brother in any way and to believe otherwise is beyond foolish on whoever part, and I can honestly say I can careless who believes me or not, and thats on my soul. I had more love for him than anybody but my mother and grandmother. And no matter how much distance I put between us to protect everyone against my rage when our father died, I always let him know I loved him regardless.

The pain I’m feeling is unbearable and I swear I never thought I’d feel it twice so soon in my lifetime, let alone 4. Im in shock, numb, confused. Neither my mother, my grandmother, or my little brother deserved this shit. I’ve shed so many tears and still have a lifetime more to go, even as im typing this my eyes are swollen and blurred. I’ll never be the same so keep all the fake concerns and questions away from me. Because I have NO MORE FEELINGS. NO MORE REMORSE. AND NO MORE BEARING ON MY TONGUE.
I’ve lost my angel, my guardian, my lifeline today and this shit will haunt me every day of my life for not being there to stop it, and I deserve it for abandoning those who truly needed me most. And for all you mfs who have an opinion, I’m venting to myself to avoid turning a few more months into 30, it’s never for you mfs benefit

Until I find out what really went tf on, and what really set this shit in motion, LEAVE ME TF ALONE.

Deion Patterson was identified by Atlanta police as the man accused of opening fire during an appointment at Northside Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, on May 3, 2023, wounding four people and killing one.

On the evening of May 3, 2023, the Cobb County Sheriff’s Department tweeted, “*UPDATE*: Deion Patterson has been apprehended. Details will be provided during a joint press conference with Atlanta PD.”

“Law enforcement has taken the suspect into custody,” Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said in a news conference. He said the apprehension occurred “without further harm,” pledging that Patterson “will be charged and stand trial.”

A woman died and four other women are “fighting for their lives,” the mayor said, calling gun violence a national epidemic.

The mayor referenced an “enormously tense afternoon and evening.” He thanked citizens for “providing critical information” to law enforcement.

“Suspect Name – DEION PATTERSON. DOB: 10/98,” police tweeted. “Call 911 –DO NOT approach him. He is considered Armed and Dangerous.”

Atlanta police released surveillance photos of the suspect, saying Patterson was at large.

“As of 3:06pm – The shelter-in-place order has been lifted in Midtown Atlanta,” police tweeted.

Police wrote on Twitter: “APD is investigating an active shooter in the area of 1110 W Peachtree St NW. Please shelter in place, or stay out of the area.”

Here’s what you need to know:

1. Atlanta Police Released Surveillance Photos of Deion Patterson, Who Was Going to a Medical Appointment, Calling Him ‘Armed & Dangerous’

Police released photos of the suspect.

“Based on our preliminary investigation, these are photos believed to be of the active shooter. Anyone with any information on this person’s whereabouts is asked to call 911. The suspect is believed to be armed and dangerous and should not be approached,” they wrote.

According to CNN, citing a police spokeswoman, the suspect was at the hospital for “an appointment,” and was accompanied there by his mother.

CNN reported that the suspect “became agitated, used a handgun and started shooting,” but his mother was not injured and is cooperating with police.

Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum praised the “first responder network” of multiple agencies in the news conference. He said that authorities determined Patterson had left the city of Atlanta and “remained a threat elsewhere.”

Deputy Chief Charles Hampton said in the news conference that Patterson shot the first victim shortly after he entered the building containing the medical center. He spent about two minutes inside the building and then exited by foot, Hampton said.

“We know that he had an appointment at the facility,” Hampton said, but he added that the motive is still under investigation.

He said that Patterson’s family was helpful to the investigation.

2. Deion Patterson Once Served in the U.S. Coast Guard, Reports Say

Journalist Jennifer Bellamy tweeted that Patterson served in the U.S. Coast Guard:

“The U.S. Coast Guard confirms the #MidtownShooting suspect Deion Patterson, 24, was a member of the service, entering the Coast Guard in July 2018 and last serving as an Electrician’s Mate Second Class. He was discharged from active duty in January 2023,” she tweeted.

“Update as of 12:42pm – We are working an active shooter situation inside a building on West. Peachtree St, between 12th St and 13th St. We are aware of multiple people injured. No suspect is in custody,” Atlanta police tweeted on May 3, 2023.

They later explained in another tweet, “Update as of 1:30p – There have been no additional shots fired since the initial incident unfolded. We are currently aware of 4 shooting victims related to this situation.”

They added on Twitter, “Three have been transported to the hospital for treatment and a fourth has been pronounced deceased on scene. Officers are actively searching for the suspect and any other victims.”

The surviving victims are in critical but stable condition, Hampton said.

3. Deion Patterson Is Accused of Commandeering a Pickup Truck at a Gas Station

After the mass shooting, Patterson went to a Shell gas station, commandeered a pickup truck that was left unattended, and took the vehicle, Hampton said. Police obtained the tag of that truck from video and then received an alert that Patterson was in Cobb County, Hampton said in the news conference.

According to the Associated Press, Atlanta police said there were aware of a carjacking a few blocks from the mass shooting scene, and said that it was discovered in suburban Cobb County.

Police initially asked people to secure their buildings.

“Anyone in the area is asked to secure their building and shelter in place. Anyone not in the area is asked to stay away,” police tweeted before Patterson was caught.

Cobb County Chief Stuart VanHoozer said in the news conference that Patterson’s truck was captured on camera so officers went to look for the vehicle.

“It was a fairly chaotic scene,” he said, noting that officers “were being called to various locations about what appeared to be legitimate sightings of this individual.” He noted that citizens were fearful.

“Technology played a huge role” in capturing Patterson, VanHoozer said. Eventually, one of the tips panned out and an undercover officer spotted Patterson and confronted him, he said.

4. Video Showed the Massive Law Enforcement Response to the Mass Shooting Scene

Video showed a massive law enforcement response to the scene.

Police have not yet identified the victims or explained why they were at the hospital.

5. Northside Hospital Tweeted That There Was a ‘Shooting at Our Midtown Atlanta Location’

Northside Hospital confirmed the mass shooting and stressed that the hospital was working with law enforcement.

“Northside Hospital is cooperating with law enforcement following the shooting at our midtown #Atlanta location earlier this afternoon. We urge people in the area to shelter in place and follow instructions from law enforcement on the scene,” the hospital tweeted.

Francisco Oropesa, Texas Mass Shooting Suspect: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know https://heavy.com/news/francisco-oropeza/ https://heavy.com/news/francisco-oropeza/#respond Sat, 29 Apr 2023 19:41:41 +0000 https://heavy.com/?p=4380093

Francisco Oropesa is the suspect accused of shooting five neighbors, including a young child, to death in an active shooter incident in Cleveland, Texas, on April 28, 2023. Authorities initially identified him as Francisco Oropeza, but said on April 30 that his name is spelled as Oropesa in law enforcement databases.

Oropesa, 39, is a Mexican national, San Jacinto County Sheriff Greg Capers told Fox News Digital. The FBI said on April 30, “The multi-agency search for suspect Francisco Oropesa continues this morning. Reminder, if you see him DO NOT approach him. He is armed and dangerous. If you have a tip about his whereabouts call the San Jacinto County Sheriff’s Office at 936-653-4367.”

The FBI also tweeted, “Here are the newest images of Francisco Oropesa and a prominent tattoo on his left forearm. Going forward, the subject’s last name will be spelled “Oropesa” to better reflect his identity in law enforcement systems. This remains a fluid investigation. #ClevelandTXShooting.”

He was described as last wearing “jeans, a black shirt, and work boots. Investigators said he has a goatee and short black hair,” ABC 13 reported.

“San Jacinto County Sheriff’s Office Investigators are currently investigating a mass shooter incident in the 100 block of Walters Road in the Trails End area of Cleveland,” the San Jacinto County Sheriff’s Department wrote in a news release on April 29, 2023.

Here’s what you need to know about Francisco Oropesa:

1. Deputies Responded to a ‘Harassment Complaint’ & Discovered Multiple Victims Deceased After a Victim Asked Francisco Oropesa to Stop Shooting His Rifle, Reports Say

According to Fox News, the victims are Oropesa’s neighbors and were shot “after one of them asked him to stop shooting his rifle late Friday, saying that a baby was trying to sleep.” The suspect used an AR-15, according to ABC 13.
San Jacinto County Sheriff Greg Capers said in a press conference that the suspect “has been known to shoot” his rifle “out in the front yard which is evident” from the shell casings that are laying in the front yard.”

The victims came over to the suspect’s fence, and one said, “Hey, could you mind not shooting out in the yard. We have a young baby that is trying to go sleep,” Capers told CNN. The suspect, who “had been drinking,” then said, “I’ll do what I want to in my front yard,” according to what Capers told CNN.

According to the press release, night shift patrol deputies “were dispatched to a residence in reference to an harassment complaint. While enroute, the communications center received multiple 911 calls of an active shooter incident at the dispatch location.”

Multiple deputies arrived at the residence “and located multiple victims deceased” inside “and several others in critical condition from multiple gunshot wounds,” the release says.

“Allegiance Mobile Health arrived and requested an air medical helicopter to fly a pediatric patient to a local trauma center,” the release says.

2. Francisco Oropesa Is Accused of Shooting the Victims in the Head as Some of Them Shielded Young Children With Their Bodies

According to Fox News, Oropesa is accused of walking up to the “front door of his neighbor’s house and began firing.”

“All of the victims were from Honduras,” Capers said in the press conference.

Capers said that deputies found a female at the front door, another victim inside the front door, a male victim inside the living room, and two victims inside the bedroom.

There were 10 people in the house, he said. “When we got here, the two females in the bedroom were actually laying over the top of two of the three younger children,” Capers said in the press conference. He said those children survived.

He said there were one male and three females among the victims.

The sheriff told Fox that the victims were shot in the head, and he told ABC 13 the shootings were “almost execution style.”

According to the sheriff’s news release, Montgomery County SWAT “arrived to assist and cleared several properties adjacent to the crime scene and determined that the shooter had fled the county.”

3. The Victims, Some of Whom Had Recently Moved From Houston, Include an 8-Year-Old Child

Capers said in the press conference that “five people were shot and are now deceased.” The ages of the victims range from about 8 to 40, he said.

Capers told ABC 13 that some of the victims recently moved to the home from Houston, but he wasn’t sure whether they were planning to stay.

At this time, according to the sheriff’s release, “there are four people confirmed deceased inside of the residence. It was reported that the 8 year old child was pronounced deceased at the hospital.”

According to the sheriff, three other patients were transported to the hospital. “Their status is not known at this time. There were two additional people inside the residence that were evaluated on scene and released,” the release says.

“The identities of the persons involved are not being released at this time pending notification of the next of kin,” the release says.

“This is still a very fluid scene and an active investigation. The Texas Rangers are currently on scene aiding with the investigation,” it adds.

4. The Suspect, Who Is From Mexico, Is Accused of Having a Cache of Firearms

According to Fox News, authorities confiscated “a shotgun, two rifles, including the .223 caliber rifle, and a pistol from the victims’ residence.”

Capers said in the news conference that the suspect was a “male from Mexico. We do have a copy of his consulate card.”

“Judge Wells has issued an arrest warrant for the suspect and assigned a $5 million dollar bond,” the sheriff wrote in the news release.

“More information will be released as details become available. Please avoid the area, as there is still a heavy police presence,” the release says.

5. Francisco Oropesa Was Previously Warned About Shooting His Rifle in His Yard, Reports Say

Capers told ABC 13 that “deputies have come over and spoke with him about him shooting his gun in the yard,” referring to the suspect.

The FBI tweeted, “The FBI is assisting the San Jacinto County Sheriff’s Office in the search for the suspect from this morning’s shooting in Cleveland, TX. All questions regarding the investigation should be directed to the San Jacinto County SO as it remains the lead investigative agency #HouNews.”

Oscar Solis & Randall Cooke: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know https://heavy.com/news/oscar-solis-randall-cooke/ https://heavy.com/news/oscar-solis-randall-cooke/#respond Thu, 27 Apr 2023 17:33:23 +0000 https://heavy.com/?p=4377716

Oscar Solis is a parolee and accused MS-13 gang member who murdered Uber Eats driver Randall Cooke in Florida, according to the Pasco County sheriff.

“Pasco Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of Oscar Adrian Solis for a homicide committed during a robbery,” an April 25, 2023, news release from the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office says.

The sheriff, Chris Nocco, described Solis in a news conference as “demonic” and said he was “affiliated with MS-13 from Indiana.”

Solis killed Cooke “for no reason,” Nocco said in the news conference. He said Solis “yanked him in and killed him,” and the victim could have been anybody.

Here’s what you need to know:

1. Oscar Solis Murdered Randall Cooke When Cooke Came to His Home to Drop Off Food, the Sheriff Says

According to the Sheriff’s press release, Cooke “was working as a delivery driver for Uber Eats on April 19,” when he “arrived at Solis’s Moog Rd. home in Holiday just before 7 p.m. to drop off food ordered by Solis’s father for Solis.”

Cooke’s Facebook page says he was also a freelance graphic designer and video editor.

Solis “then attempted to rob the victim and ultimately killed him. No other individuals were at Solis’s home at the time of the murder. The victim and Solis did not know each other,” the release says.

“PSO was originally called to investigate a body that was discovered in the Moog Rd. area on Friday, April 21 just after noon. Initially, no cause of death or identification of the body could be determined,” according to the news release.

“Through further investigation, and in working with the Pasco-Pinellas Medical Examiner, both identification and cause of death were determined over the weekend, and the case was ruled a homicide at that point. Investigators have determined that Solis pulled the victim into his home and attempted to rob him. This was captured on Solis’s home surveillance. After that, Solis murdered the victim and attempted to conceal the victim’s remains,” the news release says.

2. Oscar Solis Has a Long Criminal History in Indiana & Was Released From Prison in January 2023

According to the Sheriff’s news release, “the adult male victim was the subject of a missing persons case that was reported to PSO on April 19.”

Solis “has a long criminal history in Indiana, and was just released from an Indiana prison in January 2023 following an over four year sentence for assault and burglary. Prior to this incident, Solis had no criminal history in Florida,” the release says.

“PSO continues to investigate this case to bring justice to the victim’s family,” it adds.

Solis was on parole and had just moved to Florida and was a “very violent individual,” Nocco said in the news conference.

Nocco said Solis’s past criminal history includes charges of battery, burglary, possession of stolen auto parts, drugs, aggravated battery, and battery on detention staff. The sheriff said Solis was accused of stabbing a person in an Indiana prison.

The sheriff described Solis as a “very violent individual that Indiana released, and he came down to florida.”

3. Randall Cooke’s Death Has Rocked His Children’s Lives

Ginger Alansky wrote on Facebook, “I’m asking that Randall and our children Sierra Alansky Cooke, Sterling Cooke, and Saige Cooke are in your prayers for the tragic loss of their father.”

She added, “All the coverage and interviews of the case have NOT included them at all. It as if they didn’t exist in his life. This is unsettling and upsetting.”

She wrote of one of their daughters, “I’m most worried for her. She is graduating high school in a month and I can’t even imagine what that will feel like because her dad can not attend, he will be there in spirit.”

4. Randall Cooke’s Wife Called Him Hardworking & Loving

On April 20, Brittany Dzoba wrote on Facebook, “Please help us find my step dad! This a Randall Cooke and also a pic of what him and my mom’s car look like UberEats. last place he did an Uber eats order and shortly after both his phones were turned off and no one has heard or seen him! 😭 Please help my mom Kathy L Cooke find him!”

She also shared a message from her mother:

Hello, my name is Kathy Cooke and I am the wife of Randall Cooke. I am currently faced with something no wife should ever have to go through. On Wednesday evening at approximately 6:40 PM my husband Randall was doing his last Uber Eats delivery prior to coming home for the evening and went missing. He was roughly 4 miles from the house and called me right before his last drop off to let me know where he was and that he would be home shortly after. This was something Randy always did to let me know he was safe and on his way home. I was waiting for him to get home as I always did but as the time passed and my husband did not return home, I realized that something was wrong. I called both of his cell phones multiple times in order to get in contact with him but they both were turned off and I never heard back from him. Later in the evening I informed Pasco County Police of Randy’s disappearance and they began their search. Currently he has been missing for 2 days and the only lead we have is that the detective has found the car, but no sign of my husband.

As you can imagine the devastation not only myself, but my family are facing right now is unfathomable. Randy is a stepdad to both my daughters as well as a father too two daughters and a son. Randy was a hardworking, loving, kind and caring man who cared deeply about his family and friends. The thought of him not being in our lives is something that I cannot imagine, nor will I give up trying until my husband is found.

I am never one to ask for help, but with the situation that I am currently in I must reach out to our community for assistance. Randy was a provider for our family, he was the ideal husband and man and always made sure that he took care of us. Without Randy I am not sure where to even start let alone how I am going to be able to afford our home, car, insurance or even to live. I am reaching out for any financial help through this situation to ease some of the stress that has come along with all that is going on right now. If you or your loved ones could please help me through this tough time in order to help me get back on my feet that would be greatly appreciated. Any amount will not go unnoticed or unused and I thank everyone in advance for their continued support and love.

A GoFundMe page is raising money for Cooke’s family.

“Hello our names are Kiley and Sara we have such heavy hearts That we have to write this our friend Brittany Dzoba and her Family received news that their beloved stepdad/husband Randall Cooke was found murdered on his last Uber eats run,” it reads.

Oscar Solis is accused of taking “the life of someone so giving and had a heart of gold,” the page says.

“At this time we ask if everyone could please keep Brittany and Melany and Kathy in your thoughts and prayers as their family focus on this most difficult time. Thank you to everyone that reached out to check on them, if anyone could please help donate any amount will help. Randall was the main source of income for Brittany’s mom so if we all could help give a little to help with the Funeral expenses and other living expenses. Please help Kathy Cooke so she can grieve the loss of her soulmate Randall and not have to worry about how she is going to make ends meet She would greatly appreciate it thank you.”

5. The Sheriff Described It as a ‘Horrible Scene’

The sheriff, Chris Nocco, said in a news conference that he was not going to describe how “gruesome” the murder was, calling it a “horrible scene” that was “tough” on investigators.

“He was just a guy like everybody else trying to make a living for his family,” the sheriff said.

Cooke dropped his wife off and started doing his deliveries, the sheriff said. “He was right around the corner from their house,” the sheriff said.

Authorities got his last location from GPS, according to Nocco. At first, there was no evidence of anything “going on” at the house, the sheriff said. They went back to the house, however, and made contact with the roommate of the suspect, he said. On video, you “can actually see the victim walking up the house to order food” but the video then cut off, Nocco said.

The following day, on April 20, Solis was seen carrying trash bags with another individual, according to Nocco. They found human remains in the trash bags, Nocco said, adding that authorities recovered Cooke’s wedding ring inside Solis’s home.

Nima Momeni, Bob Lee Suspect: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know https://heavy.com/news/nima-momeni/ https://heavy.com/news/nima-momeni/#respond Thu, 13 Apr 2023 16:43:08 +0000 https://heavy.com/?p=4347168

Nima Momeni is an “IT consultant” and “entrepreneur” who is the suspect accused of stabbing San Francisco, California, tech executive Bob Lee to death, the San Francisco Police Department said at an April 13, 2023, press conference announcing Momeni’s arrest.

San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said at the news conference that Momeni is being charged with murder and with a penalty enhancer “alleging this murder was committed with a knife.” She said her office is asking that Momeni be held without bail.

Mission Local first reported that Momeni was arrested in Lee’s murder. Lee, who founded Cash App and was a cryptocurrency executive at MobileCoin, was stabbed to death on April 4, 2023, according to police. His slaying in a public space increased concerns about crime in San Francisco amid fears that the attack was random. However, Jenkins and the police chief both confirmed that Lee and Momeni knew each other. Jenkins said the crime was “jarring” to the community.

“This is more about human nature and human behavior than it is about our city,” said San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott, at the news conference. He added, “This is not about San Francisco. Mr. Momeni is our focus and the single suspect in this case.”

The Daily Beast also reported that Momeni is the suspect, writing that Lee’s ex-wife Krista Lee “identified the suspect as Nima Momeni, calling him a ‘soulless piece of s***’ in a text message” to the publication.

San Francisco County jail records reviewed by Heavy confirm that Momeni was booked into the jail on a murder accusation.

Lee managed to make a 911 call as he was dying, according to the San Francisco Standard, which reported he said, “Help! Someone stabbed me.”

Here’s what you need to know about Nima Momeni, the suspect in Bob Lee’s murder:

1. Nima Momeni Is Accused of Stabbing Bob Lee Because of a Confrontation Over Momeni’s Sister, Reports Say

Momeni “confronted Lee about Lee’s relationship with the suspect’s sister,” prosecutors argue, according to The San Francisco Chronicle.

According to court records obtained by the Chronicle, Lee was drinking with friends before the murder, including Momeni’s sister, Khazar Elyassnia, at an apartment.

A friend told prosecutors that the sister’s marriage was “possibly been in jeopardy,” and Lee asked Elyassnia if she wanted to join him and another friend when they left, but she said no, according to the Chronicle.

Lee then spoke on the phone with Momeni and Momeni “interrogated him about his sister and Lee tried to reassure Momeni that his sister was not doing drugs and that ‘nothing inappropriate had happened,'” the Chronicle reported, according to court records, which say that Lee “left his friend at 12:30 a.m. on April 4, apparently to visit Momeni’s sister at her condominium in the Millennium Tower.”

Momeni showed up also, and they left together, the Chronicle reported. Momeni’s sister’s phone texted Lee, “Just wanted to make sure your doing ok cause I know Nima came wayyyyyy down hard on you and thank you for being such a classy man handling it with class love you selfish pricks,” The Chronicle reported.

According to the San Francisco Standard, Momeni’s sister appeared in court at a hearing in the homicide case for her brother. She was accompanied by her husband Dino Elyassnia, the newspaper reported. He is a plastic surgeon, according to his website.

According to Mission Local, San Francisco police arrested Momeni “following an operation undertaken outside the city’s borders.” The news site reported: “The alleged killer also works in tech.” The site reported that police traveled to Emeryville to make the arrest. Online records show Momeni with an Emeryville, California, address.

Matt Dorsey, a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, confirmed the arrest on Twitter, although he did not name the suspect. “I’m grateful to @SFPD’s Homicide Detail and all the officers from @SFPDSouthern and elsewhere for their tireless work to bring Bob Lee’s killer to justice and for their arrest of a suspect this morning,” Dorsey wrote.

“Obviously, nothing can undo this senseless crime, and we reiterate our condolences to Mr. Lee’s family members, friends and colleagues. But I hope today’s arrest can begin a process of healing and closure for all those touched by this tragedy,” he continued.

San Francisco Mayor London Breed said at the April 13, 2023, news conference that the San Francisco Police Department and investigators “worked tirelessly” to make sure the case was handled “appropriately.” She said the same attention should be brought to every homicide case.

Scott said at the news conference that officers had responded to a report of a stabbing. He said that Lee died at the hospital. Homicide investigators developed information “identifying the suspect as 38-year-old Nimo Momeni.” Scott said that police served search warrants and an arrest warrant and took Momeni into custody in Emeryville.

“There is a lot of evidence,” Scott said, but he would not detail it, saying they wanted to make sure they obtain “justice” for Lee and his family.

Jenkins, the district attorney, commended police in the news conference, calling the crime “heinous.” Police did not immediately have a suspect, she said. “Mr. Lee’s killer has been identified,” she said. She condemned what she labeled “misinformation” in the case.

2. Nima Momeni Described Himself on LinkedIn as a ‘Dedicated Technology Partner’

On LinkedIn, Momeni described himself as a “dedicated technology partner since 2005, supporting a variety of client vertical markets in Healthcare, Finance, High Tech/Startup, Technology, Manufacturing and Service sectors.”

Momeni wrote on LinkedIn that he is the owner of Expand IT, Inc., which he has owned in San Francisco for more than 13 years. Before that, he was a consultant for Diablo IT and an IT admin/consultant for Coast Range IT. He has also worked as a system/network engineer, according to his LinkedIn page.

Daily Beast reported that Lee “had recently moved to Miami but was back in the Bay Area for a brief visit.” He was stabbed “at about 2:35 a.m. in a downtown area studded with other tech offices and million-dollar condos,” Daily Beast reported. The San Francisco Standard reported that Lee was stabbed twice to the chest. Police arrived in six minutes, according to the news site.

According to the Standard, Lee was “Square’s first CTO and was the developer of its Cash App (formerly called Square Cash).”

3. Nima Momeni Wrote on LinkedIn That He Attended the University of California, Berkeley, But the University Denies It

Under education, Momeni wrote that he attended the University of California, Berkeley, Laney College and Vista College on his LinkedIn page. He listed “cloud computing” under his skills.

However, NBC News reported that a spokesperson for U.C. Berkeley said the university has “no record of graduation or attendance” for Nima Momeni.

He also wrote that he had “native or bilingual proficiency” in Farsi as well as in English.

Momeni has a Facebook page with the same profile picture as his LinkedIn page. However, the only other thing visible on it is a skiing picture.

There is a Soundcloud account under his name.

4. Nima Momeni’s Attorney Says He Is Innocent, Reports Say

Momeni’s attorney, Paula Canny, told The San Francisco Chronicle that she believes he’s innocent.

“I think it’s interesting that they didn’t identify their source,” she told the newspaper about the friend who gave details about Lee and Momeni’s sister.

Scott, the police chief, confirmed that Lee and Momeni “knew each other” but did not explain in what way or how law enforcement came to that conclusion. Mission Local reported that police believe the two men were driving together in a car on the day of the homicide.

A “confrontation” of some type occurred, and police accuse Momeni of stabbing Lee “multiple times with a knife,” the site reported.

San Francisco police wrote in a statement on Facebook that, on April 4, 2023, at approximately 2:35 a.m., San Francisco Police officers from Southern Station “responded to the 300 block of Main Street for a report of a stabbing. Officers arrived on scene and located the victim, later identified as 43-year-old Robert Lee, suffering from apparent stab wounds.”

Police “rendered aid and summoned medics to the scene. The victim was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Despite efforts by first responders and medical personnel, the victim succumbed to injuries,” San Francisco police wrote.

5. Video Showed Bob Lee Collapsing After He was Stabbed

Video showed the moment Lee collapsed inside a building after being stabbed.

In the video, which was first obtained by the San Francisco Standard, Lee, after being stabbed, holds his side and walks up to a motorist, who drives away without helping him.

Lee then collapsed inside an apartment lobby, the video shows.

Krista Lee told KTVU-TV that, although she believes Momeni and Lee knew each other, she is not clear what the motive is.

Denise Frazier is a 19-year-old Mississippi woman who is accused of having sexual intercourse with a German Shepherd dog in a Snapchat video.

According to the Leader Call newspaper, Frazier is from Myrick, Mississippi. Her full name is Denise Nicole Frazier.

According to the news site, she is accused by authorities in Mississippi of having “unnatural intercourse and aggravated animal cruelty” and was “booked into the Jones County Adult Detention Center just before noon Wednesday” on April 5, 2023.

Here’s what you need to know:

Mississippi Authorities Say 3 Dogs Were Seen in the Snapchat Videos & Are Now Getting ‘Medical Help’

In an affidavit obtained by WDAM, a Jones County sheriff’s deputy wrote that she had received information that “a woman was accused of having sexual intercourse with a dog.”

The deputy identified Frazier and went to speak with her, the television station reported.

According to the affidavit, Frazier admitted she was in the video but said she was forced to do it, according to WDAM, which reported that the deputy received “several more videos of Frazier having intercourse with a German shepherd,” an animal which the deputy saw at her residence.

Three separate dogs were seen in the videos, and they are getting medical help, WDAM reported, adding that the Sheriff’s Department says it “found no evidence that Frazier was threatened to participate in these acts on video.”

The affidavit says other dogs were seen in Snapchat videos, according to WDAM-TV and journalist Emily Van de Riet. They reported that she is being held on $25,000 bail and faces up to 10 years in prison. She was “ordered to stay away from animals until after her trial,” WDAM-TV and Van de Riet reported. It’s not clear whether Frazier is accused of having sex with more than one dog, however.

A Video Was Recorded in the Parking Lot of a Baptist Church, Reports Say

The videos were sent via Snapchat and one was taken in a jeep outside the Freedom Baptist Church, WDAM reported.

Heavy has contacted the Jones County Sheriff’s Department for additional details.

Frazier is accused of telling investigators that she was “threatened to do it” and “people pay me,” the Leader Call news site reported.

There were two men at her residence when she was arrested, the site reported.

Denise Frazier Is Accused of Referring to 1 of the Dogs as a ‘Service Dog’

According to the Leader Call, Frazier refers to one of the dogs, a German Shepherd, as a “service dog.”

The incident occurred in Myrick in February, the news site reported.

The news site reported that an unidentified person notified police because they were “concerned about the welfare of the dog.”

A Sheriff’s Investigator Described the Case as ‘1 of the Most Disturbing Cases That I’ve Ever Investigated’

“In my 17 years in law enforcement, this is one of the most disturbing cases that I’ve ever investigated,” said JCSD Sgt. J.D. Carter, who is leading the investigation, to WDAM.

“JCSD is in possession of several videos that are so graphic that we are not at liberty to release them or even discuss the particular content,” he told the television station.

The investigation is continuing, he told the television station.

Audrey Hale, Nashville Covenant School Shooting Suspect: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know https://heavy.com/news/audrey-hale/ https://heavy.com/news/audrey-hale/#respond Mon, 27 Mar 2023 20:40:18 +0000 https://heavy.com/?p=4326554

Audrey Hale was the 28-year-old former art student accused of fatally shooting three students and three adult staff members at The Covenant School in Nashville, Tennessee, on March 27, 2023, according to Nashville police.

At 9:57 a.m., just minutes before the shootings, Hale’s former middle school basketball teammate received a message from Hale that read, “so basically that post I made on here about you, that was basically a suicide note. I’m planning to die today. THIS IS NOT A JOKE!!! You’ll probably hear about me on the news after I die,” according to News Channel 5.

Hale, whose post used the name Aiden, wrote, according to News Channel 5, “This is my last goodbye. I love you. See you again in another life.” The friend responded, “Audrey! You have so much more life to live. I pray God keeps and covers you.” Hale responded, the station reported, “I know but I don’t want to live. I’m so sorry. I’m not trying to upset you or get attention. I just need to die. I wanted to tell you first because you are the most beautiful person I’ve ever seen and known all my life.”

The post continued, according to the outlet, “My family doesn’t know what I’m about to do. One day this will make more sense. I’ve left more than enough evidence behind. But something bad is about to happen.”

In a Tuesday news conference, Police Chief John Drake said police received the first call at 10:13 a.m. and had engaged the suspect by 10:24 a.m. on March 27, 2023. He said police cars had been struck by gunfire, and the suspect was at a higher level.

Audrey Elizabeth Hale, a Nashville resident who once attended the private Christian school, is also dead, police said. Five of the six victims were rushed to a local hospital where they were pronounced dead, while the sixth was pronounced dead at the scene, according to officials.

Officer Rex Engelbert, a four-year Metropolitan Nashville Police Department veteran, and Officer Michael Collazo, a nine-year MNPD veteran, shot and killed Hale, police said in a news release.

Police released video from inside the school. The video shows a person police say is Hale shooting out the school’s glass doors before walking around the school opening doors while wearing a vest, camouflage pants and a red baseball cap and carrying a gun.

A total of seven people, including the shooter, were killed at the school, police said. The victims have been identified by police on Twitter as Evelyn Dieckhaus, Hallie Scruggs and William Kinney, all 9, along with 61-year-old Cynthia Peak, 60-year-old Katherine Koonce and 61-year-old Mike Hill. Koonce was the head of school, Hill was a custodian, and Peak was a substitute teacher.

Drake said Koonce was discovered shot to death in the hallway by herself. The custodian, Hill, was struck when Hale fired rounds through the glass, Drake said. Hale “met the head person in the hallway,” Drake said. The other victims were “spread out in different locations,” the chief said. Students were “randomly targeted,” Drake said.

Read more about the victims here.

Nashville police released body cam video showing the moment officers shot Hale to death. Be forewarned that it is graphic. The video shows officers clearing classrooms and bathrooms before confronting Hale on the second floor.

While police called the suspect a female and a woman and used she/her pronouns during their first press conferences, on LinkedIn, Hale indicated the use of he/him pronouns. Nashville Police Chief John Drake said in a later press conference that Hale did identify as transgender.

Hale’s family and friends have not commented on whether Hale was transgender or had transitioned from female to male or just preferred he/him pronouns. LinkedIn also indicated Hale had used the name Aiden Hale, including links to a now-deleted Instagram page under the name “creative.aiden,” and a Facebook page with the name “Aiden Creates,” along with a now-deleted RedBubble site with the same name. Hale used the name Audrey Hale on a personal website. The word Aiden was scribbled on one of the suspect’s guns in a photo released by police.

Police said they were searching a home connected to Hale in the Nashville area and that a vehicle at the scene helped lead them to identify the suspect.

Drake said in a news conference that the suspect lived in the Nashville area and was a former student at the school. Officials have not said when Hale attended the school or for how long.

According to its website, The Covenant School is a private Presbyterian Christian school for students from preschool to sixth grade. The school’s website quotes Head of School Dr. Katherine Koonce, who was killed in the shooting, as saying, “At the Covenant School, we are about more than simply educating our students — we are participating in the miracle of their development and seeing them transform into who they will be. Impactful teaching methods and programs, daily all-school chapel, and school-wide service-learning are the backdrop for the real work — helping children become who God intends them to be.” The school’s motto is, “Shepherding Hearts, Empowering Minds, Celebrating Childhood.”

The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee has set up a donation page to help survivors.

Here’s what you need to know about Audrey Hale, The Covenant School shooting suspect:

1. Audrey Hale, Who Police Say Left Behind Detailed Maps of School Surveillance & a ‘Manifesto,’ Was Described as ‘Always an Outcast’

audrey Hale

Facebook (Norma Hale)Audrey Hale.

“Audrey and I ran track together in highschool, we had art classes together,” wrote Hope Tavares on Facebook. “She was sweet and funny and shy but always an outcast. This really proves that anyone can be pushed over the edge when they don’t recieve the right mental health care. I haven’t seen Audrey in years and have no idea what they were going through… but this. This is heart wrenching.”

Sean Brashears, who grew up next door to the Hales, told the Daily Beast the family was “our neighbors for basically ever on that street. As long as I can really remember growing up as a kid.”

Hale was a “normal, nice person. Maybe a little quiet,” he told the site.

“We have investigations ongoing now at the residence on Brightwood Avenue and we have made contact with the father that lived at that residence and are putting together more information,” Drake said in a press conference. “We’ve also determined there were maps drawn of the school in detail, surveillance, entry points, etc. We know and believe that entry was gained through shooting through one of the doors is how they actually got into the school.”

The Brightwood Avenue home is owned by Robert Hale and Norma Fort Hale, Audrey Hale’s parents, according to police and property records reviewed by Heavy.

In a written statement, Nashville police wrote that writings “recovered from Hale revealed that her attack was calculated and planned.”

Asked whether Hale was autistic, the police chief said in a Tuesday, March 28, 2023, news conference that he had heard that but could not confirm it.

Asked by a reporter whether the school was targeted for religious reasons, Drake said he “could not confirm any of that” and did not know why Hale targeted Covenant but noted Hale was a student there in the past.

The active shooter call came at 10:13 a.m., police said at a press conference.

Surveillance video released by police shows Hale entered the school by shooting through a side door. There was no school resource officer on site at the school, but the school did have an active shooter protocol, police said.

The Metro Nashville Police Department tweeted at 11 a.m., “An active shooter event has taken place at Covenant School, Covenant Presbyterian Church, on Burton Hills Dr. The shooter was engaged by MNPD and is dead. Student reunification with parents is at Woodmont Baptist Church, 2100 Woodmont Blvd.”

Nashville police tweeted, “Two MNPD officers who entered the building and went to the sounds of gunfire engaged the shooter on the second floor and fatally shot her.”

Officers “entered the first story of the school, began clearing it,” Nashville Police spokesperson Don Aaron said in a noontime news conference. “They heard shots coming from the second level. They immediately went to the gunfire. When the officers got to the second level they saw a shooter, a female, who was firing. The officers engaged her. She was fatally shot by responding police officers.”

Aaron added, “There was a five-member team that was on the second floor at that time. Two individuals from that five-member team opened fire on the shooter. … By 10:27, the shooter was deceased. The officers had engaged the shooter by 10:27 and she was deceased. Again, I said the first call came in at 10:13 this morning.”

The police chief said he had hoped if there was ever such an active shooter situation that “we would not wait, we would immediately go in, and we would immediately engage the person perpetrating this horrible crime.”

“At the scene, scores of parents and onlookers gathered in a parking lot, awaiting updates, as helicopters circled the area, surrounded by a residential and busy businesses district,” according to The Tennessean.

Drake said the shooting was a “targeted attack.” He also said, “We have a manifesto, we have some writings that we are going over that pertain to this date of the actual incident. We have a map drawn out of how this was also going to take place. There is right now a theory that we may be able to talk about later, but it is not confirmed. We’ll put that out as soon as we can.”

Drake told NBC anchor Lester Holt that police believe Hale harbored some “resentment for having to go to that school,” but he did not share additional details. Drake said Hale “targeted random students and persons” in the school.

The manifesto has been turned over to the FBI, Drake told NBC. “It indicates there was going to be shootings at multiple locations and the school was one of them. There was actually a map of the school,” Drake said.

He added, “Our investigation tells us she was a former student at the school. I don’t know what grade she attended, or grades, but we do firmly believe she was a student there.” He said the suspect identifies as transgender and as a woman, but did not provide any other details about Hale’s gender identity and pronouns. Drake said “there is some theory” they are investigating about whether Hale’s gender identity connects to the motive for the shooting, but he said he would provide that at a later date.

Five of the six victims were taken to the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, according to WSMV. The sixth victim was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The shooter was also pronounced dead at the school, according to police.

Audrey Hale/InstagramAudrey Hale also used the name Aiden Hale, according to social media pages.

According to Hale’s LinkedIn profile, which was deleted after the shooting, Hale was an illustrator and graphic designer based in Nashville. Hale was also a student at the Nossi College of Art in Nashville, studying illustration and graphic design. Hale’s LinkedIn indicated a graduation year of 2022. Nossi College has not yet commented about whether Hale graduated from the school.

At Nossi, Hale was honored as the “most improved” student in 2015, according to the Daily Beast. Numerous awards come up on the Google cache of Nossi webpages under Audrey Hale’s name, but the pages either time out or her name no longer appears. A photo of Hale receiving an award is still visible on the school’s website.

Hale worked as a freelance graphic designer, a cat sitter and a grocery shopper for Shipt, according to Hale’s LinkedIn profile. Hale also created a children’s book about a support dog named Millie, according to the now-deleted LinkedIn profile.

On a personal website, Hale used the name Audrey Hale to advertise commercial illustration and graphic design, writing on the about page:

Hello, my name is Audrey Hale. I am a freelance Illustrator and Graphic Designer who creates logos for businesses. I primarily work with clients that desire a brand personality. I provide illustrations and designs that will help tell a company’s story. My illustrations usually bring a whimsical and light-hearted feel. Aside from art, I enjoy binging on video games, watching movies, and playing sports. There is a child-like part about me that loves to go run to the playground. Animals are my second passion, so I also enjoy spending time with my two cats. You can follow me on Instagram @creative.aiden.

Bill Campbell, a headmaster of The Covenant School from 2004 to 2008, told NBC News that he remembers Hale.

“I’ve looked back in my annuals, and I do remember her as a former student,” Campbell told NBC, adding that he thinks Hale transferred. “She was just one of our young ladies.”

Police have not released any information about a possible motive for the shooting. According to police, surveillance video from the school shows part of the incident and investigators were reviewing that footage “to try to learn exactly how all of this happened.”

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is assisting in the investigation, the agency tweeted.

The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) also responded, the agency shared on Twitter.

3. Audrey Hale’s Mother Posted About Gun Control & School Shootings on Her Facebook Page

Before the shootings, Hale was seen leaving the parents’ residence with a red bag, Drake said in the Tuesday news conference, adding that Hale’s mother asked what was in the bag, but didn’t look in the bag because the parents didn’t know Hale “had any weapons.”

Hale’s mother deleted her Facebook page after Hale was publicly identified as the suspect in the shooting. Posts viewed by Heavy show that Norma Fort Hale had posted about gun control and school shootings in the past. Hale’s mother, father and brother could not be reached for comment by Heavy and her family has not issued a public statement. Norma Hale told ABC News, “It is very, very difficult right now. I think I lost my daughter today,” and asked for privacy, the news network reports.

According to her Facebook page, Hale’s mom is “Coordinator at The Village Chapel” and “Former Meals Ministry Coordinator & Volunteer Coordinator at The Village Chapel.” She lives in Nashville. Many of her top posts congratulate her son on his academic career.

In 2019, she wrote, “Found this in a devotional book I loaned to Audrey….❤️ #divinediscovery #perfecttimingofcourse.”

In March 2018, she shared a link to a Sandy Hook Promise petition to “keep guns out of schools,” and wrote in the caption on the post “So important!” In February 2018, Norma Hale, the suspect’s mom, shared another link to a Sandy Hook Promise petition to “make large-capacity gun magazines illegal,” without any additional comment.

Hale’s mother shared a photo of a drawing that said “I [heart] God,” and wrote in the caption, “Found this in a devotional book I loaned to Audrey….#divinediscovery #perfecttimingofcourse.”

“If I had to imagine, Audrey’s parents are probably just as shocked as everybody in the neighborhood is. … It just doesn’t seem real,” the former neighbor, Brashears, told the Daily Beast. “There’s nothing that would have led me to believe that she was capable of such a thing or that she or anybody in that family would have access to, much less ever used, a gun. They just don’t seem like the family that, like, is around guns. They’re not talking about going to a gun range or they’re not going hunting.”

4. Audrey Hale, Who Had No Criminal History, Was Armed With Assault Rifles & May Have Conducted a ‘Threat Assessment’ on Another Location, Police Say

audrey hale

Facebook/Norma HaleAudrey Hale.

Drake said in the Tuesday news conference that police interviewed the parents of Audrey Hale and determined Hale purchased seven firearms from five different local gun stores legally. “They were legally purchased,” he said. “Three of those weapons were used yesterday during this horrific tragedy that happened.”

The parents felt that Hale had one weapon but sold it and was under a doctor’s care for an emotional disorder, Drake said. Hale’s parents felt that Hale should not own weapons, according to Drake, but they told police they were under the impression when Hale sold the weapon that Hale didn’t have firearms anymore. Hale had been “hiding” the weapons, the chief said. Law enforcement was also not aware of this or even “who this person was,” according to Drake, referring to Hale.

There are “several different writings of other locations,” according to Drake. “There was a drawing of potentially how she would enter and the assaults that would take place.” Drake said he had not read the entire manifesto.

The police spokesman said in a Tuesday news conference that there is no evidence that individuals were specifically targeted in the mass shooting.

According to Drake, another location was a possible target in the Nashville area, but the suspect decided not to attack that location because a “threat assessment” conducted by Hale showed there was “too much security” there in the area. He said he believes Hale was a “lone assailant.”

Drake also said police believe at least two of the guns used in the shooting were purchased legally in the Nashville area. Hale does not have a criminal history “at all,” Drake said. He also said polices are not aware of a history of mental illness but said they are looking at that.

In a later written statement, Nashville police wrote that Hale “was heavily armed with three guns, two of them assault-type weapons, and, as seen in surveillance video, shot her way into the church/school through doors on the side of the building.” They wrote:

The first call to 911 about shots being fired in the building came in at 10:13 a.m. Officers rushed to the campus, made entry and began clearing the building. Shots were heard coming from the second level. It was on the second floor, in a common area, that a team of officers encountered Hale shooting (she had been firing through a window at arriving police cars). Two members of an officer team fired on Hale and fatally wounded her. Those two officers are Officer Rex Engelbert, a four-year MNPD veteran, and Officer Michael Collazo, a nine-year MNPD veteran.

“A search warrant executed at Hale’s Brightwood Avenue home resulted in the seizure of a sawed-off shotgun, a second shotgun, and other evidence,” they wrote.

NBC News reported that police believe Hale fired on arriving officers.

Aaron, the police spokesman, said Hale, “was armed with at least two assault-type rifles and a handgun.” Aaron did not provide any other information about the weapons, other than saying the shooter had two rifles and a pistol. He did not say if the guns were purchased legally or how the suspect obtained them.

Hale “entered the school through a side entrance and traversed her way from the first floor to the second floor, firing multiple shots. We now know that there are three students who were fatally wounded as well as three adults inside the school.” According to Aaron, “an officer had a wound from cut glass. That is the only other injury that I’m aware of.”

Aaron said there were not any armed officers or security at the school. “This is a church that operates a private school,” Aaron told reporters. “There was no Metro Police personnel assigned to that building at any time.” He said the shooting happened in an upper level of the school in an area he described as “kind of a lobby-type area. It was not in a classroom per se.”

Republican Tennessee Governor Bill Lee tweeted, “I am closely monitoring the tragic situation at Covenant, & the @TNDeptofSafety & @TNHighwayPatrol are assisting local law enforcement & first responders at the scene. … As we continue to respond, please join us in praying for the school, congregation & Nashville community.”

Republican U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn tweeted, “Chuck & I are heartbroken to hear about the shooting at Covenant School in Nashville. My office is in contact with federal, state, & local officials, & we stand ready to assist. Thank you to the first responders working on site. Please join us in prayer for those affected.”

Fellow GOP U.S. Senator Bill Hagerty added on Twitter, “Devastated and heartbroken about the tragic news at Covenant School. I’m grateful to law enforcement and first responders for their heroic actions. I am monitoring the situation closely, and my office is in contact with local officials & available to anyone needing assistance.”

“I was literally moved to tears to see this as the kids were being ushered out of the building,” Drake said in the news conference.

5. Audrey Hale’s Neighbor Said the Mass Shooting Was ‘Tragic for Everybody’

A neighbor, Sandy Durham, told the Daily Beast she was a Hale family friend.

“I do know Audrey, I’ve known her since she was a baby. I had just gotten out of the shower when all of this started happening. I didn’t really know anything more than that. Something was going on next door. It’s just tragic for everybody. The sweet children that were hurt, killed, the adults. All of it,” she told the Daily Beast.

According to The Covenant School’s website, it was founded in 2001 “as a ministry of Covenant Presbyterian Church.” The school has an enrollment of between 195 to 210 students in recent years, according to the website. The school has a teaching faculty of 33, its website says. Police said there about 10 or so other staff members in the school on a typical day.

The school’s website adds, “The Covenant School graduates attend the area’s best secondary schools, where they establish themselves as leaders, problem solvers, and collaborative learners. The Covenant School students are sought out and recognized at their next school for their sterling character, integrity, and their desire to learn and serve others.”

Koonce, the head of the school, who was among the victims killed, wrote on the website, “Ours is a unique challenge — to educate twenty-first-century children in a way that prepares them to impact their culture and think in accordance with timeless Truth. Never before have we known more about the skills and experiences students need to be successful and develop skills. But, we must be about more. As we capture our children’s attention and their minds for learning, we also want to capture their hearts in relationships that challenge their thinking and help them learn critical skills. Our graduates attend the finest schools in the Nashville area, where they not only excel academically, but also act with character that comes from authentic faith in Jesus.”

The school’s website adds, “The beauty of a PreSchool-6th school is in its simplicity and innocence. Students are free to be children — they can feel fully and safely known by our faculty and become leaders under their guidance. The Covenant School begins coaching our students to be leaders at an early age. Fifth and sixth grade students practice their leadership skills with younger students as they mentor them under the direction of a trusted adult. Every year, the faculty nurtures relationships and purposefully encourages healthy bonding between students, so they may better understand their role in strengthening the school community.”

According to The Covenant School, “Academically, a PreSchool-6th school allows curriculum to be more specialized, so students have the potential for outstanding academic achievement. When the time comes to make a decision about higher education, the Covenant School works closely with each family — we consider each child as an individual and counsel them throughout the application process, so they can transition to their next school with confidence.”

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, in 2021, the FBI “designated 61 shootings as active shooter incidents. In these incidents, 103 people were killed and 140 wounded, excluding the shooters. For the period 2017–2021, active shooter incident data reveals an upward trend.”

Only one of those shooters was a female, according to the FBI. Only 3.8% of active shooters were women in another FBI study of incidents from 2000 to 2013.

James Toliver Craig, Aurora Dentist: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know https://heavy.com/news/james-toliver-craig/ https://heavy.com/news/james-toliver-craig/#respond Tue, 21 Mar 2023 02:18:02 +0000 https://heavy.com/?p=4316404

James Toliver Craig is a 45-year-old Aurora, Colorado, dentist and father of six who is accused of poisoning his wife, Angela Craig, to death, on March 15, 2023.

The office manager of the dental practice where Craig worked told police that Craig and his wife worked out in the morning on March 6, 2023, and, before the workout, Craig “made Angela a protein shake or pre-workout shake, in which James gave her extra protein because she was feeling sluggish,” an affidavit in the case says.

“After the workout, Angela became faint and dizzy and ultimately James took Angela to the hospital,” according to the affidavit.

Craig “was arrested early this morning on murder charges in the poisoning death of his wife,” according to a news release from the City of Aurora Police Department.

Patrol officers and the Aurora Police Department’s Major Crimes Homicide Unit arrested Craig and booked him into the jail at about 2 a.m. on charges of first-degree murder, the release said.

He worked for Summerbrook Dental in Aurora. The website is now down, but a cache of Dr. Jim Craig’s biography says, “Dr. Craig was an associate professor at the University of Missouri Dental School, where he taught courses in Clinical Dentistry, Biochemistry and Histology.”

Craig was a dentist at Summerbrook Dental Group for more than 16 years, according to his LinkedIn page.

“Based on the totality of the investigation, James has shown the planning and intent to end his wife’s life by searching for ways to kill someone undetected, provided her poisons that align with her hospitalized symptoms, and working on starting a new life with” a new woman,” the affidavit says.

Here’s what you need to know:

1. Police Say James Toliver Craig Drove His Wife to a Hospital After She Complained ‘of Severe Headaches & Dizziness’

The charges “stem from about 8:45 p.m. Wednesday when Craig drove his wife, 43, to a local hospital because she was complaining of severe headaches and dizziness,” the news release said.

“Shortly after arriving at the hospital, the wife’s condition deteriorated rapidly, and she was placed on a ventilator in an intensive care unit,” it says.

“She was declared medically brain dead a short time later.”

Daily Beast obtained the affidavit, which you can read here.

According to that affidavit, On March 15, 2023, at approximately 11:08 a.m., “victim Angela Craig (DOB: 04/15/1979) presented herself to University Hospital because she had a severe headache and was experiencing dizziness.”

She was accompanied by her brother and later met by her husband, the affidavit says, but at 2 p.m., she had a seizure and declined, eventually being placed on life support. “Hospital medical personnel could not find a known medical condition that would have caused Angela’s rapid medical decline,” the affidavit says.

According to the affidavit, a person whose name was blacked out told one of the attending nurses “his suspicion that Angela was the possible victim of poisoning.”

Craig had recently ordered Potassium Cyanide for their dental practice, the man told the nurse, adding that there was “no medical reason or purpose” to order it for a dental practice, according to the affidavit.

The nurse called police. Craig’s business partner told police that they had known each other for 20 years and went to dental school together but noted that Craig was “a risk taker” and had filed for bankruptcy in 2021 and “was on the verge of bankruptcy again,” the affidavit says.

Craig confided in him that he was having marital problems with Angela, the affidavit says.

On March 6, 2023, the day Angela first became sick, another person noted that Craig was at an exam room computer with the lights off doing something on his own computer and then texted her that he would be receiving a personal package and not to open it, according to the affidavit.

The package arrived on March 13 and was opened by another employee, it says. Inside it, she saw a bio-hazard sticker and what said “Potassium Cyanide” on a circular canister, the affidavit says. It adds that the employee later googled it and realized Angela had the same symptoms.

Craig was accused of telling a nurse that Angela might have been poisoned with Potassium Cyanide, the affidavit says.

Craig claimed that the package contained a ring he wanted to surprise Angela with, the affidavit said.

He later admitted it contained Potassium Cyanide but said Angela asked him to order it, according to the affidavit, which says that Angela had been admitted to the hospital multiple times, for symptoms including being dizzy and weak.

A woman who was a professor of nursing texted with Craig about Angela’s symptoms, and he told her things like, “low blood pressure all night, vomiting in the morning. Still trying to figure this out,” the affidavit says.

2. Police Say Angela Craig, Who Was a Mother of Six, ‘Was Poisoned,’ & Called Her Death a ‘Heinous, Complex & Calculated Murder

Major Crimes Homicide Unit detectives “launched an intensive investigation into the suspicious death,” the news release says.

“The investigation revealed the victim was poisoned. A warrant for first-degree murder was obtained early Sunday morning shortly after doctors made the decision to take the victim off life support,” it says.

“When the suspicious details of this case came to light, our team of officers and homicide detectives tirelessly worked to uncover the truth behind the victim’s sudden illness and death,” said Division Chief Mark Hildebrand in the news release.

“It was quickly discovered this was in fact a heinous, complex and calculated murder. I am very proud of our Major Crimes Homicide Unit’s hard work in solving this case and pursuing justice for the victim.”

Police noted: “The investigation remains active and ongoing. Anyone with any information about the case is asked to contact Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720.913.STOP (7867).”

Craig’s biography is featured on the website of Dental Implants in Aurora.

“I am a general dentist practicing in Aurora, CO for the past 15 years. I have been placing implants for 12 of those years, and have been an instructor for many implant companies and have lectured and mentored many dentists and specialists around the country,” it quotes him as saying.

“Prior to private practice, I taught as an associate professor at the University of Missouri School of Dentistry for 3 years. I have also been on a research team for the National Institutes of Health and through that team, worked on novel bone grafting materials and strategies for reducing shrinkage in white fillings,” the page adds.

“My undergraduate education was at Brigham Young University. I live in Aurora with my wife and 6 kids, and any time I’m not in a dental office setting, I can be found in the great outdoors!” he is quoted as saying.

“My approach to dentistry begins with sincerely listening to the patient,” Craig said in a video for his dental group.

3. James Toliver Craig Is Accused of Googling, ‘How Many Grams of Pure Arsenic Will Kill a Human,’ & Flying Another Woman Into Denver While His Wife Was Sick in the Hospital

Craig is accused of saying he didn’t think his wife was going to “make it, “ but then mentioned business in the office, the affidavit says.

Angela had accused her husband of poisoning her and saying something to Craig along the lines of “there are poisons they don’t test for,” the affidavit says.

A person told police that Craig recently mentioned that he had told Angela he wanted a divorce, the affidavit says.

Craig claimed Angela was suicidal and may have taken pills, but none of the children mentioned their mother’s depression or prior suicide attempts, it adds.

In text exchanges, James and Angela discussed their relationship, “mainly about James’s healing and counseling,” the affidavit says, and it includes many of the couple’s texts.

“Beginning on February 27, 2023, we observed that the user had conducted searches related to poison. Those searches included ‘how many grams of pure arsenic will kill a human’ and ‘Is Arsenic Detectable in Autopsy?’” the affidavit says.

Craig had searched via Google “buy Oleander” and through Nerdfighteria Wiki, “6 Deadly ‘Undetectable’ Poisons (and How to Detect Them), the affidavit says.

Authorities also found chemical purchases and emails “intimate in nature” that “contained explicit conversations,” including travel plans from Austin to Denver, Colorado, the affidavit says.

James had the woman visit him while his wife was in the hospital sick, it adds.

He told her something had happened to Angela, and she said how “sorry she was for him and that she wished she was helping him, not pulling him away,” according to the affidavit.

She said she wanted to “be there for him but did not want to mix in with his family and friends and pretend to be only a friend when there was something more,” it says.

One witness told police that the marriage had “always been tumultuous” and Craig “had multiple affairs with several women, told Angela he had been addicted to pornography since he was a teenager and drugged Angela approximately five to six years ago,” the affidavit says.

He drugged her because he planned to commit suicide and didn’t want her to save him, it contends.

He had gambled over $2,000 and their finances were dire, the affidavit says.

Craig had been “recently communicating with a woman … about what appears to be a sexually intimate relationship. It appears James was flying this woman into Denver while his wife and the other of his children was dying in the hospital,” the affidavit says.

4. James Toliver Craig Referred to Himself on Facebook as a ‘Theme Park Junkie’ & Opera Lover

On Facebook, the couple had a joint account, and the profile picture shows them together with the words, “Light the World, One by One.”

Her Facebook page is filled with pictures of her kids, and comments about getting a bird, eating protein bars, and children’s activities.

Craig also has a Facebook page in his own name. It shows him with a surf board.

His profile picture says, “husband, father, dentist, theme park junkie, opera lover, football fan, cook, fisherman, snowboarder.”

5. James Toliver Craig Is Accused of Writing His Ill Wife, ‘I Didn’t Drug You,” But a Client Called Craig ‘Literally the Best Dentist I Ever Had’

According to the affidavit, authorities say they found text messages between Craig and his wife. In one, his wife said she felt drugged.

“Given our history I know that must be triggering. Just for the record, I didn’t drug you. I am super worried though. You looked really pale before I left … Like in your lips even,” Craig is accused of writing her, according to the affidavit.

Denver7 spoke to clients of Craig. “He was literally the best dentist I ever had. That’s why I recommended him to my mom. That’s why I recommended my brother. So, it was a large clientele that came here under that trust,” Andrew Orth told Denver7.

Another former patient wrote a recommendation on Craig’s LinkedIn page. “Dr. Craig has the latest in technology and was able to put a crown on for me in a single visit. Most dentists require two visits. He has a calming manner as well as his excellent staff,” he wrote.

“Dr. Craig was able to explain everything so I could easily understand what was happening. I enjoyed his professionalism and easy going approach to dentistry. If you try him once, he will become your dentist.”

Timothy Bliefnick: Accused in Murder of Rebecca Bliefnick https://heavy.com/news/timothy-bliefnick-wife-rebecca/ https://heavy.com/news/timothy-bliefnick-wife-rebecca/#respond Thu, 16 Mar 2023 23:33:54 +0000 https://heavy.com/?p=4311502

Timothy Bliefnick is a former “Family Feud” contestant who is accused in the murder of his estranged wife Rebecca Bliefnick in Quincy, Illinois.

In a press conference on March 13, 2023, which ran on the WGEM-TV website, Quincy Police Chief Adam Yates said that Bliefnick’s estranged wife, Rebecca, was found shot to death in her home on February 23, 2023.

According to Yates, she was a mother of three who was 41 years old.

He said that Quincy police detectives had been “working non-stop” since that day.

Here’s what you need to know:

1. Authorities Accused Timothy Bliefnick of Home Invasion & Murder

On March 13, 2023, Yates announced in the news conference that police had arrested Timothy W. Bliefnick in the murder of Rebecca Bliefnick. He was charged with two counts of first-degree murder and home invasion for Rebecca Bliefnick’s death, according to Yates.

Yates said that authorities sought a “no-bond” warrant. He said that Timothy Bliefnick was taken into custody without incident and transported to the jail. Yates reminded the public that defendants are innocent unless they are proven guilty in a court of law.

He added that a “great deal of work” went into the investigation, but he did not provide specific details about the evidence against Bliefnick.

According to Yates, prosecutors had worked alongside investigators during the “complex investigation,” and he commended police investigators. The police chief said detectives had worked long hours and forgone weekends and off-duty  days while they were “putting the pieces of this investigation together.”

He said that Bliefnick’s arrest marked a “significant step forward in the search for justice for Rebecca.”

2. The Murder Was an ‘Act of Domestic Violence,’ the Prosecutor Says

The police chief called the murder a “brutal crime,” saying it had the Quincy community “on edge and our residents living in fear.” He urged people to lock their doors, turn on exterior lights, be aware of their surroundings, and report suspicious activity to the police.

He said there was nothing they could do as a Police Department to bring Rebecca Bliefnick back to her family “and her three boys.”

Josh Jones, the lead trial attorney, also said in the news conference that authorities are accusing Rebecca Bliefnick’s “estranged husband” of the homicide. “This horrific crime was not a random act of violence,” Jones said.

He said the crime was an “act of domestic violence.”

Domestic violence takes many forms, Jones said, adding that, “Every victim of domestic violence must be treated with the urgency, respect and the compassion that he or she deserves.”

Jones said authorities’ focus and efforts “remain on bringing her murderer to justice.”

Yates said there were no other suspects in the case. He said that a judge had signed an arrest warrant after being presented with evidence he did not detail and said that “everyone” was considered a suspect in the beginning of the investigation.

3. In 2020, Timothy Bliefnick Said It Was a ‘Thrill’ to Appear on ‘Family Feud’

In 2020, Bliefnick and some of his family members appeared on the game show “Family Feud,” according to KHQA-TV.

“Tim Bliefnick and some of his family members traveled to Los Angeles last fall to be taped as one of the featured families on the popular game show,” the article says.

KHQA reported that Timothy Bliefnick said “appearing on Family Feud was a thrill and he can’t wait for the show to air.” The video of the show is no longer available online.

4. Timothy Bliefnick’s Attorney Called Him an ‘All-American, Midwestern Dad’

Bliefnick’s attorney Casey Schnack told People Magazine that Timothy Bliefnick is “a sales executive who starred in football at Quincy University in Illinois.” He is entering a plea of not guilty, the magazine reported.

“The state’s attorney’s office appears to be coming out with a narrative that this was an act of domestic violence. And the fact of the matter is, there was no domestic violence that we are aware of,” she told People Magazine. “Tim does not have a criminal history. He’s never been arrested for battery, domestic battery, anything violent, anything ever.”

“There was tremendous pressure from the community for an arrest to be made,” the attorney told the magazine. “And naturally the estranged spouse is going to be the number one suspect regardless of the other circumstances.”

Schnack added to People: “He was active in the community. He was a youth football coach. He was actively involved in his church here. A lot of people knew him. It’s very surprising that this is where the family is at right now. He’s your standard, all-American, Midwestern dad.”

5. Rebecca Bliefnick Was Remembered as a Travel Nurse Who Won an Award for ‘Exceptional Care’

The obituary for Rebecca Bernadette Postle Bliefnick says that she “was murdered in her home on February 23, 2023. She was just 41 years old. Despite the circumstances of her death, she is remembered for the life she cherished-a life of compassion, generosity, faith, and fierce love for her family.”

The obituary continues:

Becky was born in Quincy, IL, attending Payson Seymour Elementary School followed by Quincy Notre Dame High School, where she was named valedictorian, the first of many academic and professional honors in her lifetime. She graduated cum laude from Quincy University with a bachelor’s degree in biological science with a minor in chemistry and worked for Sanofi Aventis as one of their top-performing pharmaceutical sales representatives. But Becky always envisioned herself working hands-on in the medical profession, so it was no surprise when she left pharmaceuticals for a career in nursing-her true calling-where she was able to provide care and comfort to people on a daily basis.

Becky graduated summa cum laude from Blessing-Rieman College of Nursing and Health Sciences, as well as receiving the Faculty Outstanding Senior Award. Even more remarkably, she gave birth to her third child during spring break of her senior year, only missing one day of school. Becky worked for Quincy Medical Group in gastrointestinal surgery before transitioning to Blessing Hospital’s emergency room. During the COVID pandemic, she additionally worked as a travel nurse at both Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville, MO, and Hannibal Regional Hospital in Hannibal, MO.

According to the obit, Bliefnick was nominated in 2020 for the international Daisy Award “which honors exceptional care given by extraordinary nurses.”

The nomination testimonial stated, according to obit, “I got to kiss my husband and tell him how much I loved him all because of Becky. There are no words to express how grateful I am to her for what she did.”

“Beyond her registered nurse (RN) credentials, she was also a certified trauma nurse specialist (TNS) and a sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE). At the time of her death, she worked at Blessing Hospital in vascular access and was working toward her nurse practitioner certification,” the obituary says.

Ramin Khodakaramrezaei was identified by Redmond, Washington, police as the man accused of stalking and murdering a podcast host and her husband, according to a news release from Redmond police.

The victims were podcast host Zohreh Sadeghi, 33, and her husband, Mohammed Naseri, 35, Daily Beast reported.

“Our hearts go out to the victim’s family and the Redmond community following this horrific tragedy,” said Redmond Police Chief Darrell Lowe in the news release. “This is an incredibly sad situation and the worst possible outcome of a stalking case. We will continue investigating what led to this tragic loss.”

“Upon entering the home, officers discovered a male and female deceased inside from gunshot wounds. The stalking suspect, 38-year-old Ramin Khodakaramrezaei, was the deceased male inside the home,” police wrote in the news release.

Heavy contacted Redmond police spokeswoman Jill Green to ask the name of Sadeghi’s podcast, but she said that she was still looking into that.

Here’s what you need to know:

Police Responded to a Call of Shots Fired at Zohreh Sadeghi’s Home

According to the news release posted on the police website, Redmond Police “responded to a report of shots fired in a home in the 16700 block of NE 89th St. at approximately 1:45 a.m. on Friday, March 10. Three people are deceased after a suspected stalker broke into the home.”

When officers arrived at the scene, “they found a man who lived in the house lying on the floor. Officers pulled him outside, where they discovered he had been shot,” the release says.

“Officers performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) lifesaving measures until paramedics arrived. Unfortunately, the victim succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene,” it says.

Police spokeswoman Jill Green said in a news conference posted on the KOMO News website that, around 2 a.m., police were dispatched to a residence for the report that shots were fired.

Ramin Khodakaramrezaei Broke Into the Home Through a Window & Zohreh Sadeghi’s Mother Escaped, Police Say

In the news conference, Green said that Sadeghi’s mother had escaped the home, and she went to a neighbor’s house to report the crime. Once officers arrived “we saw a male in the front yard and discovered he had a chest gunshot wound,” Green said. He was pronounced deceased, she said, adding that he was Sadeghi’s husband.

“When we entered the residence we discovered the wife, who was a stalking victim,” Green said. That’s also where police found the deceased suspect, according to Green.

She said the suspect broke into the home “through a window.”

According to Green, Sadeghi, her husband, and her mother all lived in the home and were the only people home at the time. “He had an altercation with the mother,” she said of the suspect. According to Green, Khodakaramrezaei “shoved her, and she was able to escape to the neighbor’s.”

Police Say Ramin Khodakaramrezaei Had Listened to the Female Victim’s Podcasts & She Filed a Restraining Order Against Him

According to the police news release, Khodakaramrezaei “had reportedly listened to the female victim’s podcasts and began communicating with her. The victim and suspect became friends, but when things escalated, she filed a no-contact order against him.”

“Redmond officers and detectives were familiar with the victim and residence because of the ongoing stalking investigation,” the release says.

“Our hearts are heavy today as many woke to learn about the tragic shooting in our community overnight. Please join me in sending deepest condolences to the victim’s family and friends, and strength and appreciation to our Redmond Police team who responded to and are investigating this horrific tragedy,” Mayor Angela Birney said in a statement posted to the City of Redmond’s Facebook page.

The podcaster’s home is assessed at more than $1 million, according to Red Fin.

“I do know that he had a no contact restraining order against him, and I am not sure how long that’s been but we are aware of that now,” Green said in the news conference.

Ramin Khodakaramrezaei Was a Trucker With Ties to Houston, Texas

Online records give Khodakaramrezaei’s address as being in Houston, Texas. He had also previously lived in Los Angeles, California, according to public records reviewed by Heavy.

He had worked as a trucker, according to The New York Post.

Ramin Khodakaramrezaei Was Accused of ‘Barraging’ the Victim With Messages

Green told Daily Beast that Sadeghi met Khodakaramrezaei “when he started tuning in to her podcast.”

“He had begun listening to her podcast and started emailing her and messaging her, just starting conversations about the podcast, and my understanding is that they became friends,” Green told The Daily Beast.

“He just started barraging her with messages until it escalated to where she decided to file a no contact order,” Green told the publication.

“People do feel safe here. and they should feel safe here. It is a very safe city most of the time. It’s just a really unfortunate event that happened. I’m not sure what could make someone do that to be honest,” Green said in the press conference.

Contacted by Heavy, Green verified that it “is true” that the suspect was accused of barraging the victim with messages.

She said it went on for “many months, even close to a year.”

“This is just a tragedy. A tragic situation. We don’t often see that in Redmond. We may never know why somebody would do this and go to that length,” she said in the news conference.

Stephen Smith Death: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know https://heavy.com/news/stephen-smith-death-murdaugh/ https://heavy.com/news/stephen-smith-death-murdaugh/#respond Sun, 05 Mar 2023 01:10:50 +0000 https://heavy.com/?p=4294567

Stephen Smith was a 19-year-old South Carolina man whose mysterious July 8, 2015, death along a rural roadway is being investigated again by state law enforcement officials in the wake of the Alex Murdaugh investigation.

Alex Murdaugh, the patriarch of a prominent South Carolina legal family, was convicted of killing his wife, Maggie Murdaugh, and son, Paul Murdaugh, near the dog kennel at the family’s hunting estate, according to live trial video of the verdict posted to YouTube by CNN. His surviving son, Buster Murdaugh, attended the court hearing. He has not been accused in connection with any crimes.

According to Greenville News, Smith’s body was discovered along a rural Hampton County road “in the early morning hours of July 8, 2015.”

The trial, as well as the Murdaugh Murders documentaries on Netflix and HBO Max, have led to renewed interest in Smith’s death. FITSNews reported that the Murdaugh name appears in police reports multiple times.

Greenville News reported that the hashtag #StandingForStephen was launched in early September 2021 to raise money for a headstone for Smith, money for his family’s legal fees, and a scholarship in Smith’s name. A GoFundMe page for the effort raised more than $21,000. There is also a Facebook page called Standing For Stephen.

No one has ever been arrested, charged, or formally named a suspect in connection with Smith’s death.

Here’s what you need to know:

1. Stephen Smith Was Found Dead Along a Rural Road & the Coronor Initially Thought His Death Was a Homicide, Reports Say

A reporter for The Island Packet newspaper posted investigative documents from the case on Document Cloud. FITS news has also published some case documents here, as well as a timeline of the Smith death investigation.

According to Jake Shore of the Island Packet, South Carolina Highway Patrol investigator Todd Proctor wrote the posted investigative report, which says that he began investigating a “possible hit and run” on Sandy Run Road near Joe Miley Road on July 8, 2015. As he headed to the scene, another law enforcement official, identified only as Corporal Allen, said that “it was a homicide, not a hit and run,” the report says. Proctor advised Allen to make sure that was the coroner’s ruling, according to the investigative report.

When he arrived at the scene, he saw a “white male lying in the roadway on the center line with head trauma to the right side above his brow,” the report says, adding that Coroner Ernie Washington said the death was a homicide and that the wound was a “gunshot wound and showed me the entry point.”

There was also a “defensive wound to the hand,” the report says. He walked the scene and “saw no evidence of any car parts or pieces,” according to the report. Later, he received a call from another law enforcement official who said that an autopsy was conducted and no bullet was found, and “it was determined to be a hit and run,” the report says.

The sheriff said that the doctor was ruling it a motor vehicle accident, according to the report, which adds that the coroner said that “he would have to go with the doctor’s ruling.” Proctor reminded the coroner that he had said he was certain it was a gunshot, and he said he had to go by the opinion of the doctor, according to the report.

The body was taken to the funeral home, and Smith’s mother and father, Joel and Sandra Smith, were notified, the report says, but the investigator called the funeral home to obtain Smith’s clothing.

The investigator contacted the doctor who had done the autopsy to try to understand what had brought her to that decision, the report says. She said it was not a gunshot wound, and no bullet or fragments were found during the X-ray and that it didn’t look like a bullet wound in her opinion and that since the body was found in the roadway, she could only theorize that it had to be a motor vehicle that caused the death, the report says.

Smith had a partially dislocated right shoulder, the report says. She did not find any glass fragments or any other evidence of a motor vehicle, it notes. An investigator returned to the scene to look for vehicle debris but found nothing, according to the report.

2. Investigators Believed Smith Was Walking Home After Having Vehicle Trouble, Reports Say

The investigator contacted state law enforcement officials, and one of them said that state investigators had looked at the wound and didn’t believe it to be a gunshot wound, the report says. State investigators found a smartphone and car keys in the deceased’s right pocket, the report says, adding that the phone was undamaged but wouldn’t work.

They also located Smith’s vehicle a couple of miles from the scene and checked that as well, the report says. They went through the vehicle and found the wallet of the deceased and noticed the gas cap was off, it says. They found engine oil in the vehicle and believed that he had vehicle trouble because they could not get the vehicle to start, according to the report.

Smith was discovered between the vehicle and his residence so they believed he was walking home when the incident occurred, the report says. FITS News obtained crime scene photos and reported that they were very graphic in nature, writing, “Stephen’s entire face was covered in blood that cascaded from a 7.25-inch gaping hole on the right side of his forehead. His head was misshapen by blunt force.”

“His right shoulder was partially dislocated. Cuts and bruises dotted his right hand. His loosely tied shoes were still on and his clothes appeared untouched. His phone and keys were still in his pocket,” the site reported. FITS News reported that “investigators theorized that the mirror of a semi-truck hit Stephen’s head.” The site reported that Proctor said in an audio recording, “We’re not classifying this as anything other than a murder,” disputing the doctor’s finding.

3. The Murdaugh Name Appears Many Times in the Stephen Smith Investigation, Reports Say

According to FITSNews, Stephen Smith was “beloved. He was an openly gay young man a small town.” The site reported that Smith “was bright and determined to make a better life for himself. He was in school for nursing at the time of his death.”

FITSNews, citing State Patrol documents, reported that “detectives were pursuing Paul Murdaugh and his brother Buster Murdaugh as possible persons of interest in the case,” but noted that they were never named suspects and that police were also pursuing other persons of interest.

The site reported that there were “rumors” linking Buster Murdaugh to Stephen Smith but “detectives never proved this connection.” The Murdaugh name “was mentioned at least 40 times throughout the course of the investigation,” the site reported.

ABC4 News reported that “witnesses interviewed as part of the original investigation into Smith’s death repeatedly implicated Alex Murdaugh’s surviving son, Buster, as having been involved in a relationship with Stephen and potentially connected to Smith’s death,” citing “South Carolina Highway Patrol investigative files obtained via the Freedom of Information Act.”

According to News Nation Now, Smith’s “wallet was left in the car, and the gas station was in a different direction from where he was headed.”

“It’s a sad case, and it’s control and power in the Lowcountry and across the state,” said Smith family friend Susanne Andrew to News Nation Now. “Where’s there’s smoke, there’s fire.”

4. South Carolina’s State Law Enforcement Agency Announced in 2021 That It Was Going to Investigate the Stephen Smith Death With ‘a Fresh Set of Eyes’

On June 23, 2021, South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) spokesperson Tommy Crosby told Bluffton Today, “SLED has opened an investigation into the death of Stephen Smith based upon information gathered during the course of the double murder investigation of Paul and Maggie Murdaugh.”

That information was not released.

Crosby told Bluffton Today that SLED is conducting its own investigation with “a fresh set of eyes.” According to Bluffton Today, the “investigation will include evidence and statements gathered during previous investigations.”

Heavy has contacted SLED for more details.

“I’ve been waiting on this day for 2174 days,” Smith’s mother Sandy told FITSNews in 2021. “Thank you, God!”

5. An Attorney for Stephen Smith’s Family Told the News Media There Were Other Suspects

In 2021, ABC News 4 reported that the Smith family’s attorney, Andy Savage, indicated that Murdaugh family members may not have been involved in Smith’s death.

“There are suspects we have in sight that are unconnected to Murdaugh,” Savage told the television station, adding “[t]he focus any in the media have on Murdaugh may be unfounded.” He later clarified that he was talking about Paul Murdaugh, the site reported.

A 2015 article by Live 5 News reported that the Hampton County coroner had “confirmed that a dead body was found after a hit-and-run in the Sandy Run Road area of Hampton County.”

The coroner, Ernie Washington, told the television station that Stephen Smith, 19, “died of blunt force trauma to the head, most likely from a mirror on a passing vehicle.” The coroner told the television station that the “make and model of the vehicle involved in the accident is unknown at this time,” and police were continuing to investigate.

Keith Melvin Moses, News Crew Shooting Suspect: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know https://heavy.com/news/keith-melvin-moses/ https://heavy.com/news/keith-melvin-moses/#respond Thu, 23 Feb 2023 01:29:51 +0000 https://heavy.com/?p=4227250

Keith Melvin Moses was named by the Orange County sheriff as the 19-year-old man accused in the murder of a Spectrum News 13 television employee, a 9-year-old girl, and a 38-year-old woman in Orlando, Florida, on February 22, 2023.

The Spectrum News 13 reporter has been identified by his family as 24-year-old Dylan Lyons. He was a Philadelphia native and graduate of the University of Central Florida who began working at the news station as a multimedia journalist in July 2022, according to the station’s website. You can read about his life here.

T’Yonna Major, the 9-year-old girl who was killed, was an aspiring gymnast, according to NBC News. You can read about her life here.

The Orange County Sheriff identified the other deceased victim as 38-year-old Nathacha Augustin.

The Sheriff’s Department also released video showing the arrest of suspect Keith Melvin Moses.

WESH reporter Luana Munoz said Lyons leaves behind a fiancé. She broke down emotionally as she reported on the shootings outside the hospital. “It is very emotional here,” she said.

“This is every reporter’s absolutely worst nightmare,” Munoz said. “We go home at night afraid that something like this will occur, and that is what happened here.” She said “a fellow reporter has died while out covering a shooting.”

Orange County Sheriff John Mina said in a February 22, 2023, news conference that Moses is accused of shooting five people; three have died, the 38-year-old woman, 9-year-old girl and the reporter.

The 9-year-old girl’s mother and a second news crew employee are still alive but are in critical condition, Mina said. Four of the shootings were random and involved victims whom Moses didn’t previously know, according to Mina. Moses is in custody, the sheriff said.

“The same suspect Mr. Moses is responsible for all those shootings,” Mina said in the news conference. “What a horrible day this has been for our community and our media partners,” Mina said.

Here’s what you need to know about Keith Moses and the Orlando shooting spree:

1. The Sheriff Says Keith Melvin Moses First Shot a 38-Year-Old Woman Who Was His Acquaintance

According to Mina’s news conference, on February 22, 2023, at 11 a.m., deputies responded to Hialeah Street for the report of the first shooting.

Once there, they found a woman who was shot and who succumbed to her injuries, according to the sheriff. Moses was an acquaintance of that woman, said Mina. Homicide detectives responded to the scene, and they developed good leads on the suspect, he said. The sheriff initially said she was 20 years old, but a later update said she was 38.

“This is a tragic and sad day, especially for those in the Orange County community. Hard to put all of this into words right now, but we ask for your prayers for the impacted families and for those that are injured fighting for their lives,” The Florida Sheriffs Association tweeted.

2. The News Crew Was Covering the Homicide, But It’s Not Clear Whether Keith Melvin Moses Targeted Them Because They Were Journalists, the Sheriff Says

At 4:05 p.m., the Sheriff’s Department began getting 911 calls about another shooting at that location and a shooting nearby, according to Mina. That’s when they found a News 13 reporter and photographer shot in or near a vehicle, according to the sheriff. The sheriff confirmed that one of the News 13 crew members has died, but he didn’t say whether it was the reporter or photographer. He was later identified as Lyons, who was a reporter.

He said the news crew was “on the scene” to cover the earlier homicide.

“It’s hard to know if he was targeting this news crew,” the sheriff said of Moses. He said the news crew’s vehicle “doesn’t really look like a news vehicle,” but a photographer was there, “so it’s possible.” He also said “it’s possible he could have mistaken them for law enforcement.”

Greg Angel, a reporter and anchor for News 13, wrote on Facebook, “Life is fragile. We were just talking to our colleagues – friends – this afternoon. Life was normal. And now, life is not normal.”

He said the surviving news photographer has “been able to speak with investigators and colleagues. Great sign. But lots of procedures and healing to come. They’re not alone. A 9 year old girl has also died. Her mother is also in the care of doctors.”

Angel said the vehicle carrying the news employees was “unmarked.”

“There are no words. Truly no words,” he said. “I do want to say thank you to those media colleagues who reportedly saw what happened and immediately jumped in to help. Provided critical help that may have saved at least one life.”

3. The Sheriff Says Keith Moses Entered a Random Home Next & Shot the Child & Woman

According to the sheriff, the mother and 9 year old girl were shot inside a home. He said it was unclear why the suspect entered the home. Moses did not know that woman or child, according to Mina.

The mother is in critical condition, Mina said.

“He walks into the house and shoots the 9 year old and the mom,” the sheriff said.

4. Keith Melvin Moses Has a Lengthy Criminal History, the Sheriff Says

Moses has a lengthy criminal history, including gun charges, aggravated battery and assault with a deadly weapon, burglary and grand theft charges, Mina said in the news conference.

When deputies arrested Moses, he was armed with a handgun, Mina said.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department initially tweeted, “ALERT: Multiple people shot on Hialeah Street, same scene as a homicide earlier today. One person has been detained.”

It’s not clear where Moses lived before; the only criminal case that comes up for Keith Moses, 19, in Orange County, Florida, court records is a misdemeanor drug case.

5. A News 13 Journalist Says Station Employees Gathered in a Circle & Prayed

Celeste Springer, a News 13 reporter, said on air that the station’s employees sat in a circle and “said a quick prayer.”

“This is extremely devastating for all of us,” she said, calling the news crew a family.

“Please say a prayer for every victim of gun violence in America,” Springer said, also requesting prayers for the news photographer who remains in critical condition.

The surviving victims were transported to nearby hospitals, according to the sheriff.

Mina said sheriff’s officials have detained the man they believe was responsible for the crime spree. He then named Keith Melvin Moses and said he was formerly charged with the first murder on the morning of February 22, 2023.

According to the sheriff, charges are expected soon in the other shootings.

Miles Pfeffer: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know https://heavy.com/news/miles-pfeffer/ https://heavy.com/news/miles-pfeffer/#respond Sun, 19 Feb 2023 20:31:53 +0000 https://heavy.com/?p=4222661

Miles Pfeffer is the 18-year-old suspect accused in the murder of Temple University Police Officer Christopher Fitzgerald in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on February 18, 2023, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.

“Officer Fitzgerald gave his life protecting the Temple community and we are forever indebted to him. He valiantly served the Temple community and the people of Philadelphia,” the Temple University Police Association tweeted.

According to Fox29 journalist Steve Keeley, Miles K. Pfeffer is charged with 24 counts, including criminal homicide. CBS News reported that, according to the Philadelphia district attorney, Pfeffer “will be charged with murder, murder of a law enforcement officer, robbery, carjacking, firearm offenses, possession of an instrument of crime, and related offenses” and will not be eligible for bail release.

Heavy has reached out to the Philadelphia district attorney’s office for more details.

The Buckingham home’s worth is estimated at more than $1.2 million, according to Redfin.

4. A Local Journalist Wrote That Miles Pfeffer’s Brother Was With Him When the Shooting Happened & Their Mother Picked Miles Pfeffer Up

Journalist Steve Keeley tweeted that a source had provided the affidavit of probable cause to him, and that the entire incident was “captured on surveillance videos.”

“Officer Fitzgerald was heard over police radio saying he was in a foot pursuit. Police officers responded & located officer Fitzgerald in the 1700 block of Montgomery Avenue suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the face & upper torso. Officer Fitzgerald was immediately transported to Temple University Hospital where he was subsequently pronounced dead at 7:27pm,” he wrote.

“Video surveillance depicted Officer Fitzgerald on foot pursuit of a male dressed in all black clothing westbound on Montgomery Ave. The officer catches up to the male just east of 18th Street where the officer male get into a struggle,” wrote Keeley in the Twitter thread.

He wrote that Officer Fitzgerald was heard repeatedly yelling at the male “to get on the ground. The male is then seen firing a handgun at Officer Fitzgerald who falls to the ground. The male then stands over Officer Fitzgerald & fires several more shots into his face & head area.”

Keeley continued that the male “then reaches down & attempts to take the officer’s service weapon, but can’t seem to get the weapon out of the holster. He also searches the unresponsive officer’s pockets. The male then flees westbound & turns north on 18th Street. Additional footage on North 18th depicts the male confronting a 2nd victim. The male is heard saying ‘Give me the keys or I’ll kill you.’ The male then takes the person’s vehicle & flees on 18th Street. The vehicle was recovered at 29th Street & Ridge Ave.”

According to Keeley, “The accused killer’s brother was with him when Officer Fitzgerald tried to stop them & is one of the witnesses who saw & heard what happened, Law Enforcement sources tell FOX29. He ducked into an alley & hid, and saw the officer chase Miles Pfeffer and then he heard gunshots.”

He noted, “Additional information was later received that Miles Pfeffer was later picked up by his mother JMP at 29th Street & Ridge Avenue, & driven out to their home on Quarry Road in Buckingham.”

Pfeffer’s mother, Jill Petrushka, indicates on Facebook that she is from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but she doesn’t have much visible on her page. The suspect’s father, Marc Pfeffer, also says on Facebook that he is from Philadelphia.

5. Slain Temple Police Officer Chris Fitzgerald Was Remembered as a Father & Avid Runner

WPVI journalist Beccah Hendrickson wrote on Facebook that Fitzgerald was “a dad, an avid runner, and as described by a fellow officer ‘everything you would want in a police officer.'”

She added: “Last night, he was on duty, patrolling alone when he came upon a carjacking in progress and tried to intervene. He was shot and killed. He’s the first Temple police officer ever killed in the line of duty.”

Temple University Police Association thanked people in a Twitter statement for stopping by a memorial for the fallen officer.

WFAA-TV reported that Fitzgerald was the son of a former Fort Worth, Texas, police chief.
